My whirlpool clothes washer starts agitation as soon as i start the wash cycle
Front loaders always do, top loaders sometimes do. With a top loader, you can start your cycle and then add your clothes.
With a front loader, the idea is that the detergent is being washed out of the detergent drawer, and to stop it all landing on one garment and sitting there, the drum rotates to spread the happiness :>D

Determining the Age of Your Whirlpool Appliance
This advice applies to all appliances manufactured by Whirlpool. Determining the manufactured date of most appliances is accomplished by looking at the SERIAL NUMBER. On Whirlpool appliances this is determined by the following method:
The 1st two numbers identify the WEEK produced, the 2nd digit identifies the YEAR.

Whirlpool cabrio will not spin
If your Whirlpool Washer is not spinning the problem is almost always the lid switch. If the lid switch is bad you will not hear the motor running when in spin. To check the lid, first unplug the washer.

After each load of laundry, my Whirlpool Cabrio washer has brown-gray oil deposits in spots on the white plastic bottom of the tub.
Unfortunately it goes with the territory of buying top loader machines. Underneath the agitator is a gearbox and clutch full of waterproof grease. It is below the water so there has to be seals to stop ingress of water. Your seals need replacing. It is not really a job for the home mechanic as all of the case has to come off, the drum lifted off to even get to the gearbox. It also needs custom tools. I had a clutch replaced under warranty and sat in the kitchen watching the engineer. When It came time to replace our dryer, I bought matching Whirlpool front loaders and they actually take more clothes and use a fraction of the water and electricity.
Costco won't touch your claim because it is well out of Whirlpool Warranty. It is part of wear and tear and maintenance. A good service engineer can do the job in about an hour and a quarter. Tell them the story and you have been advised it is probably the seals to the clutch and gearbox.
