I have a Weller 1002B soldering station. Haven't
Hi, I'm not sure the tip is defective. Check that the tip is screwed in tight. If it is not good and tight the tip will not get a good heat transfer from the solder wand. Hope this helps. If the wand will heat then the tip should.
We can't keep the tip
Clean the end of the tip with a smooth file down to bear metal heat it up and retin the end with fresh solder. Are you using multicore solder with resin flux ? some old solder does not have any flux in it.
Trouble with the 2 work lights
You need to open the gun case and check the connections to the bulb sockets inside. I have several of these guns and the only problem has been the occasional need to re-tighten the tip screws to break through the oxidized copper adjacent the screws. Good luck!
Tip screws for model 8200
The tip screws are a drilled bolt for this unit. There isn't room to tap the barrel holes out further if the threads are bad. You used to be able to buy tips that were pre-loaded with the proper clamp bolts. Good luck!
2020202
In the year 2020 day 202 we will not need soldering iron, they will be archived
with the world's people. Cockroach's will be running the world and eating
Twinkies. By the year 2025 the cockroaches will be dieing off do heart failure
from eating Twinkies. The next 2020 years Twinkies will be live and well with
the all chemical preservatives they--that is Twinkies....
Twinkies, walk Gentry upon this earth, and do no MAS' and this earth will be
good to you, Twinky.

How long to i leave it on
Turn it on long enough to melt solder, then switch off for a short time. Repeat this process as you solder to avoid oxidizing the tip and solder, yet keeping the solder fluid. If it starts to poorly heat the tips, tighten the tip nuts somewhat to break the oxidation that occurs on the bare copper. Hope this helps!
Its making like a humming noise, what is wrong
the transformer screws may be loose, or the plates may have delaminated in the transformer. as long as it is working it should be ok. try tightening all the screws you can get to, see if the noise quits.
Does not melt solder
The body contains a transformer, which steps your 120AC down to a lower voltage. The lower voltage runs THROUGH the tip, heating it up. Possibility ONE: Transformer is no good, throw it away. TWO: Not enough current is running through tip, because tip is corroded OR those mounting nuts are corroded, loose, OR somebody put new tip into nuts but neglected to bend both legs of new tip 90 degrees. Look at the barrels, you will see little holes in the sides, tip's legs go into those holes.
How can I check if the D550 is delivering full
It probably isn't; the tightness of the nuts is critical since any resistance at that point will reduce the current flow and cause the tip to heat slowly or not at all.
The element will also oxidize at its connection point too which also causes a loss of current over time.
Lights don't go no weller d550
I cannot see by the picture if you have one or two light bulb model, but if you have the 2 bulb, then you must know that these bulbs are in series so they both must be good and they have to be 1,5 volt bulbs each or you will get a very dull light. If it is a single bulb, then you need to check the screw-in socket and check the bulb with an ohm meter or continuity tester. iF ALL TESTS OK, THEN THE PROBLEM IS INTERNAL AND YOU WILL HAVE TO OPEN THE GUN OR JUST FORGET IT. GOODLUCK, MACGIVOR.
