Hallo i have cubase sx3 I can get my backing music
You must adjust the record level from the input device - i.e. mixer or soundcard. There is no input level control within Cubase. It is often the case, however that the problem lies with the backing track being too loud.

When you mentioned the "protection device" I knew that you have to have something that is used to attach to a pc so the software will run. I managed a network for awhile and we had several pc's like that. I did some research about the Steinberg Cubase and found the following;
QUOTE
It is a License Proprietary that has Copy protection
Most versions of Cubase use dongles for copy protection, which allow license transfer between host machines, although current OEM variants use software based protection. The Atari versions of Cubase used the cartridge port for this purpose, while Parallel port dongles were used up until Cubase VST5.1 on the PC and Mac.
Cubase SX V1.0 introduced the use of cross-platform USB dongles combined with a system of code encryption licensed from Syncrosoft.
The Syncrosoft protection process allows software developers to insert what are known as 'Dongle Calls' in the software to enable the program to check the dongle and the relevant license is in place before the user can use various functions.
UNQUOTE
Therefore, you will have to buy a dongle that will allow the software to run, otherwise it will not.
Good luck and please post back that you are successful and give thumbs up if my solution has worked for you. If I can be more helpful just reply.

How can I get wavelab
Hi,
You can run xp on a virtual machine (VMware or VirtualBox, e.g.) and your program, inside.
On the other hand, Steinberg released version 6 of WaveLab that is compatible with W7.
Good luck!

Cubase 4
During your computer's boot sequence, watch for a notice telling you which key to strike to ENTER SETUP. This will take you to your BIOS management. Find and disable Intel SpeedStep, C1E, or EIST, or related PowerNow! settings on AMD processors. These power saving settings are designed to slow down or shut down one or more cores of multi-core processors during times when the operating system thinks that the processing power is unnecessary, but running advanced DAW software such as Cubase draws power at very near the full system capacity, and it takes a long time to reboot the temporarily suspended processor cores. During this core reboot lagtime, Cubase is often deprived of the processing power needed to route audio signals through its complex internal bussing system (Steinberg's patented VST system link), and this power loss causes it to crash. If you disable the SpeedStep settings in your BIOS, you may notice a very gentle rise in your electric bill, as your computer's processor will be running at full capacity all the time, but you can always re-enable SpeedStep when you're not planning on recording anything.
