move you out of computer repair

stair elevators are not a topic here, at all.
but did you read the manual first or call of their assistance?
it even works on power outages(has battery)
it has 350lb max load, so using it to carry huge packages will fail.
if over that limit.

There are several potential causes. One is that the clutch mechanism that allows the steps to 'pump' the flywheel has suffered an internal failure, possibly a sprag failure; another is that the drive from the clutch to the resistance has broken (I don't recall if that is a chain or belt on the 4000)

Rather than troubleshoot from distant memory, here's a link to the service manual:

Fixya is a voluntary help website and we don't buy or sell anything and we aren't affiliated with any brands.

Those dealing with (noisy) machinery should invest in a Sonascope or a stethoscope designed for listening to and pinpointing mechanical noises. These things are inexpensive and invaluable and more practical than listening through a screwdriver or a sawn-off broom handle.

For more serious work there are electronic vibration meters available but my trusty Sonascope has never let me down.
