I have a sony TC 530. Fast fwd and rewind work
You need to replace the motor run capacitor. It's a small aluminum can looking thing with three wires right next to the motor; they often leak paraffin wax into the bottom of the case when they overheat. Whether or not yours has leaked it's easy to replace if you can use a soldering iron. Search eBay for a Sony reel to reel 1.5uf 250VAC motor run capacitor - they're less than $15 and come with detailed instructions.

yes, one nice overhaul will fix..(this can be done by you if you are daring...when u open take apart you will find a metal strip like band..I had used a bandaid for brakes the gauze side) you need new brakes (just like a car it is run down) on the reels in order for it slow & stop when it suppose to...or you can search and find a good old fashion repairman..(sorry I dont know of none)...for dragging, before playing all open reels fast fwd to one end then rewind it back to the beginning now hold the blank reel with that little bit catch tape try to tighten full side tape by going slightly going the other way not trying to stretch nor pop the tape.....now press play

I have a sony TC-660 reel to reel player, it had
In order to maintain tape control and tension the reels always pull lightly in opposite directions during PLAY mode. The capstan moves the tape in the desired direction at a precise speed. If the capstan doesn't engage the tape BETWEEN itself and the pinch roller you'll get the reels battling over control of the tape. Check the tape routing.
Hear both sides of tape on playback ??
It's a 4-head reversable deck where the Forward tracks are arranged across the physical tape surface, front-to-back as follows:
ForwardLeft ReverseRight ForwardRight ReverseLeft
...so it sounds like the Reverse playback heads are engaged at the same time you play Forward, so you would hear those adjacent tracks backward. If you play the tape in the Reverse direction, is the Forward program audible (but backward)?
If so and in otherwise high fidelity, something in the Forward/Reverse head selection may be hosed.
Or, if the out-of-phase tracks are mushy and low volume, the physical tracking of the tape across the heads could be WA-A-A-A-Y bad. That would probably be visible as sideways distortion in the tape path. Shine a high-intensity light on the tape where is passes over the heads, then reverse it while watching where it sets up on the heads. It should be centered on the heads and not change its orientation when reversed. Compare where it tracks in motion with the probable visible wear marks (shiny bars across the heads perpendicular to the travel) where the tape has polished the heads over the years.
Or, the heads are so worn the coils pick up signals from their neighboring tracks.
Reel to reel plays audio backwards
HAVE YOU TRIED TURNING THE REELS OVER? ON SOME PANASONIC UNITS THE REELS CAN BE PLAYED IN EITHER DIRECTION BUT THE SOUND IS REVERSED IF THE REELS ARE UP SIDE DOWN. TRY TURNING THE REELS OVER AND IT SHOULD STRAIGHTEN OUT YOUR AUDIO PROBLEM AS WELL AS BOOST THE VOLUME

Worn out part.
you will need to get another unit and cannibalize. These parts are no longer available
What are the best tapes to buy to recrod from your
maxell or tdk (which is hard to find now)....if your reel is 7 inch you want 1800 ft, normal bias (lo noise hi output) tape (for 10 inch you will use the 2400 ft) ....anything longer your tape will be dragging (both while recording and playing) hope this is helpful...feel free to rate
