THE CHUCK SCREW IS EITHER A TORX BIT, POSSIBLE 20 TORX OR ITS A PHILIPS OR SLOTTED SCREW, REMEMBER THE SCREW IS LEFT HAND THREAD AND ALLOT OF THE TIMES IS LOCTITED IN SO IT DOESN'T UNSCREW WHEN THE ITEM IN THE CHUCK SLIPS AND RUBS ON THE TOP OF IT. IT SHOULD REMOVE FAIRLY EASY!! MAKE SURE WHEN REMOVING THE CHUCK THE TOOL IS IN LOW GEAR/ DRILL MODE OR YOU WILL FIGHT IT FOREVER AND POSSIBLY DOEING DAMAGE TO THE CLUTCH/TRANNY ASSY. THE CHUCK WILL UNSCREW STANDARD THREAD, SHOULD BE A 2 MINUTE PROSSES TO REMOVE THE CHUCK UNLESS ITS ON REALLY HARD. JIMS TOOL SERVICE

Hello Blreid, to get the chuck off, you will need to be able to close the chuck. If this means using 2 plumber's wrenches, then so be it. Follow the directions below, and let me know if it works.
Remove the REVERSE-THREAD screw at the bottom of the chuck. Set the clutch collar to the highest setting, and set the gear to the slowest setting. Remove the battery! Get the biggest allen wrench you can fit in the end of the chuck(the shortest leg) and tighten the chuck down around it, allowing the jaws to rest and tighten on the flats of the wrench. Lay the drill on its side(chuck toward you, handle to the left, and allen wrench to the left, horizontal to the deck. Then with a hammer(soft hammer if you care about the allen wrench) quickly and deliberately hit the allen wrench in an attempt to cause the allen wrench to spin counter clockwise. Let me know if this works for you, and if not, explain what is happening.
How to remove the keyless chuck from a hitachi
The screw mentioned in solution number one is a left hand thread once you have removed it use an allen hey in the hole the screw came out of as if undoing a normal right hand thread a scarp blow with a hammer may be neccesary. then do the opposite when installing new chuck
When I am using the
Assuming 115v hammer. When the hammer runs, look for sparks/ burning at the armature. When the brush/ springs get hot they will weaken and pull back enough to break contact with armature. Check brushes and armature for wear or damage. The bottom or part of the brush that makes contact with the armature should be shiny and smooth. The armature should also look smooth. If you see black /burning could be the end of the armature and if the brushes look burned and the wire/spring blue from overheating is an indication of serious problems. If you do not see sparks/ burning at armature, suspect switch. There are a lot of hitachi counterfit tools. Check your model number at
www.toolpartsdirect.com for replacement parts. If you have counterfit tool, you may not be able to get parts (made in china). Good luck
While using model # ds
Remove the battery and use the eraser on the end of a pencil to clean the battery contacts in the drill. If that doesn't fix it for you, test the battery to be sure it is hot. If all of that does not get you up and running then generally the motor is shot. J.
