is it normal that hot water vessel vent line is connected to the water vessel? - yes, the overflow is designed to return into the tank, otherwise it will spill on the floor and Hamilton has already enough problems with leaking units, it doesn't need another.

Call any appliance parts store in your area, you'll need the make and model of the unit and since you already have the part #, you should not have any trouble. I believe Sears Appliance Parts store carries this brand.

From the description of this model's replacement filters, they appear to be carbon filters. What you are seeing is most likely bits of carbon granules from the filter media (which doesn't say much for the construction quality of these filters). I would suggest getting an inexpensive countertop or under-counter filtration system instead of using Brita pitcher filters. These systems usually come with both carbon and sediment filters and if you get a non-proprietary one (i.e. not a system off the shelf at Lowe's), the filter elements are a lot cheaper to replace.

On a small refrigeration system like that you need very specialized equipment and a ton of experience to make it work...also you will need to find the leak and fix it before filling it will do any good...
You will probably be better off getting a new one...

Possible that the thermostat is not working, ry reducing the control down to see if the cut off takes place.
It there is no action, shut offfor 8 hours and check witha lower settings. If the unit goes on , then you have to check the thermostat and control for fault.
