Make sure the unit is unplugged!!!
I believe it is the lid switch. You can remove the housing and the switch is located adjacent to the latch. Test it with a multi-meter.I do not recommend bypassing the switch except to test it's operation. Serious injury can occur!!!

Dear Sir,

In a 5402 Eppendorf Centrifuge, Error 1 states primarily for an EEPROM error. EEPROM is a tiny memory chip that stores individual details of the centrifuge, mainly the microprocessor time base (for correct time set operations), the mains voltage (115 or 230 V, to inform and set the motor current levels), and the imbalance level adjustment for the imbalance sensor. When the centrifuge powers up, these data are readen, and if all OK, the centrifuge is ready to go. If one of them corrupts, especially the 115 or 230 Volt information, we get Error 1 and no start allowed.
To check and reprogram this EEPROM we have to acess the service routine. This is done by by jumping together pins 1 and 5 of X8 conector, on the base of the electronic board, located behind the power cable panel in the back of the centrifuge. There are about 20 setting or check parameters, but usually 1 or 2 of the described above need to be reprogrammed. Please e-mail me for details:

Turn it on and bring up the temperature. The pressure inside will increase as the temperature increases.

Model number would be helpful. If the unit has not be subjected to moisture or other contaminants, I would guess there is an electronic problem. The rheostat could be dirty or defective.
If the control is not sealed, cleaning it might help. Something as simple as WD 40 could help.

Further support may be channeled through the distributor. As with many devices, it is suggested to have mainteance and repair done by personnel trained specifically in such for the devices. There is quite a bit of information in this manual one might wade through Page 28 lists error codes and error 2 listed refers to door open during cycle.

I can only offer a user manual to the device. The next to last page of the manual lists contact information by country. You might see if you can get the answer from a listed source.

A prior Fixya answer offers the following:

A reading of 221 ppm carbon monoxide gas is a dangerous level that should be taken seriously. You could try a new battery and reset the detector.
