IF there is NO plastic on it, you can use heat from something like a heat gun or oven to bake it off. You might also try something like CLR or muratic acid BUT they are not that expensive to replace.

you have to twist the top round so that the switch is pressed in place so the power can be turned on, from new it takes a few times to get it to click in place this is the safety device so it cannot be turned on by mistake.

You may just be overloading the circuit. Easiest correction - unplug something else that's running (or turn off a light) on the same circuit and see if the breaker still shuts off.
But wait - also important - was there any burning smell? If so, this is dangerous. It's a short circuit that occurs when a "hot" wire (black) touches another hot wire or touches a "neutral" wire (white) in one of your outlets. You should not use that outlet and have an electrician look at it. Or it could be a ground fault (similar to the short circuit - when a hot wire touches the ground wire on the side of a metal outlet box which is connected to the ground wire. For either of these, you need an electrician.
