If yours aren't drying out while air drying, you should either reduce the amount of boiling water you are using or increase the amount of mielie meal you're adding to the boiling water. I'd suggest you try for a thicker mixture and see if that works. You might also try drying the out in a dehydrator.

You didn't say which breed of parakeet but I'll take it that you're refering to a readily available Budgie. They live about 5-8 years depending upon diet and environmental conditions.

it would be "luck of the draw", be it male or female, birds of the same feather normally will flock together but in some cases the primary bird my be territorial and become hostile t word the newbie because of territorial issues or vice-versa check reactions before transferring newbie inside cage for safety
