HT lead and spark plug but the problem persists. what else could be causing it? its only an idea but the engine management on the early beetles was a bit primative if your confident swap the injectors

sounds like its misfiring spluttering when accelerating CHECK FOR SPARK PLUG FAULT,HT-LEAD,OR THE COIL ITSELF.
