Trace back the linkage from the shift lever to the transaxle to see if the linkage has come apart. If it is a manual, then I know the linkage connects to the transaxle on the top, forward, left of center. There is a retaining bolt (i think bolt, been a long time) that attaches the linkage to the transaxle. If this has backed out very much the linkage is not going to shift gears on the transaxle.

I hope this helps.

Why does speed control lever return to neutral when going forward ?

this model uses a series of groves cut into mower body to maintain the transmission gear/direction , it's held into groves by a spring just under the cover , if this is broken a replacement can be gotten from sears (part# 164X39) to replace it , it should take at least five pounds of force to move shift lever out of grove to next gear , if not then your shift spring is loose or broken

I have a Craftsman LT1000 Riding Lawn Mower, Model # 917.271645. My problem is that even with the Gear Shift Rod sitting in the Neutral position within the Shift Console, I still have trouble...

There is a neutral safety switch, also known as an interlock switch. Check the switch mount and be sure it has not come loose from it's mounting location. If the engine does start from time to time, it most likely has become loose or has a loose connection at the connection. Let me know what you find.

Lawnmower wont move in fwd or reverse

Is the brake sticking. On my craftsman mower there is a bar under the brake pedal that pushes back a lever when starting. And the lever sticks. I have to reach underneath and pull the lever forward and then the mower goes. I haven't found a solution to that yet.
