For starters, check the condition of the LOWER flex- shaft.Remove the LOWER from the upper shaft, and while turning the string head, see if the top end of the flex shaft turns also. I think your unit has a clutch which makes diagnosing the flex shaft in the UPPER shaft housing (the one attatched to motor) a lot more difficult. If the upper flex-shaft is clutched, it WILL NOT turn when turning over the engine (unless the clutch is bad or has malfunctioned; which is rare). To inspect the UPPER flex-shaft, you will have to do a dissassembly (partial) at the motor housing cover in the front to pull the upper shaft out to inspect it. To get it all the way out to look at it, you will have to remove the throttle cable from the arm on the carb and disconnect the STOP switch wires going to the coil (located UNDER the front motor housing cover). Post back with what you find. Wish I was there to help.
Hi I have turned the head unit and the shaft moves, and I know that the shaft from the engine is turning although with vibration.
Unsure what to try any ideas?
Vibration (with the engine running) could be the crankshaft bearings going bad, or the clutch drum is loose and wobbling. Since it could be loose, that would enable you to maybe turn the top flex shaft over. I suggest you inspect the clutch housing and clutch and remove the rear crankcase cover and check for play in the crankshaft. (just grab the nub on the counterweight and wiggle it). These two things can cause major vibration
