SOURCE: engine kicks back when starting 10.5 hp briggs.
If I get your description right, it looks like you have some build up of fluid in the combustion chamber. This could be caused by too much oil in the crankcase caused when oil is pass the full mark on the dipstick. Fuel could be caused by too much priming (if there is one) or hard to start with choke on and a lot of cranking. To clear out fluids remove spark plug and crank a few times. The reason this happens is that fluids do not compress so when you pull it turns as much as it can then stops dead and is not much fun. I hope I got the meaning of your problem and gave you the proper answer. All the best and good luck.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
This sounds like you have connected the power lead to the ground wire vs the power lead. Take a meter and read resistance on the wire your using with the fuse removed. If you read resistance you are using the ground wire. There is the possibility that you have connected to the Black vs RED wire from the engine. You may have to switch the 2 wires on the harness plug. There may be an adapting harness but I need the information below to confirm same.
If you would please what is the engine model & type number that is stamped on the engine?
I will help you lets just communicate well and get his resolved.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly
