Vizio VW42L went black screen, no sound could turn on but not off, with remote or on the side. Called a repairman, decided to purchase a new TV. Year gone by, plugged it in and it has worked for several days, then went black again. Repairman thought main board when I called him last year. It did make a chatter noise when it went black this time. We really like the Vizio when it works. I don't want to pay a repairman if it is just a matter of popping in a new main board. Thanks, April

I think Vizio's are decent televisions, you may have been unlucky. Saying that, I do agree with the repairman,, by the time you get the television fixed the bill will be close to the price of a brand new televsion.

Most likely you either have a defective backlight inverter, bad back lamp. Based off of your model #, I'm gonna lean towards a back lamp.

Use your remote and find RESET from the settings. I have a tendency to reset the sound on my TV's with all of my remotes, sometimes a different remote for a different TV or stereo will do something funky and turn off my sound the only way to get it back is to reset the settings and reprogram the channels.

try main board as it controls all picture funtion. does the screen still light up? no picture...ect..

If the backlights for the screen do come on and you also have 12v and 5v feed the main board then it does sound like the mainboard will need to be replaced.

Do you have back light when turning on the TV? if you do then just replace the main board should resolve the problem. if you do not have back light, you will need to replace the inverter board(s) depending on your model. The inverter board(s) is located on the left side of the TV facing back of TV. you may have two inverter boards depending on your model. the other is located on the right side of the TV. Both mount vertically.
