We are buying a house with a ruud upka-030jas ac unit. we have tried to turn it on. it blows the fan on in the inside of the house but the outside unit does not come on. there is no manual that we have found. is there a special trick or may something be wrong?
Access the compressor common, start, run terminals. Disconnect the wires from them and test them with an ohm meter. You should have a measurable resistance between each terminal and infinite from any of the terminals to the compressor case. If that is good you want to check if you have a starting relay if the relay is bad the compressor will have very high amps and then go off on either the thermal overload of circuit breaker.
Check if you are getting 24 volts to you contactor coil on your condensing unit. If you are that means your problem is in your condensing unit check voltage going to your condensing unit it will be usually 208 to 230 v.
No special tricks alyson.....prolly just a breaker or fuse.check the main panel for a turned off breaker and at the unit there's a disconnect box that may have a bad fuse.

sounds like compressor is going bad .. first try a hard start kit.. have staved off replacing compressor many times.. may last a long time may last 1 day
If you are running A.C.,and the T-stat is set at 65,and the room temp is 74,the A.C. will run until the temp goes down to about 65 or so.Turn T-stat to 76 and the unit should shut down. Also, check furnace filter for dirt, and check condensor unit coils and see if they are dirty. If condensor coil is dirty it cannot breathe properly. That will cause the compressor, and the blower motor to overheat.Wash cond. coil down with water hose to clean .Start at top of coil and go sideways, slowly going down.
it is likely low on coolant or as some say "freon" that or the indoor fan motor has not run properly. let it thaw completely by shutting it off and just turning on your fan switch from auto to the on positon. if you begin to feel air flow eventually you need coolant added b/c you probably have a leak from the system being old
You are likely low on charge and the unit is freezing up. You need some with gauges to check. You should not try to run this unit until then or it will burn out the compressor.
A few things to check; Clean filter, make sure none of your ducts have blown loose in attic area, or under house. If neither problem exists check to make sure your compressor is kicking on, it makes a deeper toned noise than fan motor. If it's not coming on, call A\C company, preferably the installer to check it out. Good luck.
first look for red button neer the copper line set if has one push it second inspect thermostat wires for weed eater damage check disconnect for fuses check breaker at main panel pull disconect and remove cover check stat wire connections look at the capacitor if swelled up on top bad if all look ok put disconect in using insulated object manually push in contactor if unit comes on check for 24 volt ac on yellow stat wire to common if none stat wire could be loose at indoor unit or stat bad hope this helps you
