My lenovo G550 appears not to charge when the charger is plugged in despite turning the mains power on and off to see if power is getting though and the blue neon light showing on the mains adapter. Just now it switched off though lower power despite a fully light up charger being connect, then when off the amber light flashed slowly, powered it up and now its charging. Surely I should not have to let it die or turn off to get charge through any ideas. Marc

Have you made any modifications to the computer lately? (Taken it apart ect?) I had a similar issue with mine. There was a short in the keyboard. I ordered and installed a new keyboard and it has booted up fine ever since.

Try something as simple as checking the keyboard connection, this will require taking the laptop apart though.

Replace the battery, it's faulty.

Batteries only have a useful life, then they have to be replaced. Sounds like yours is doing like the ink cartridges, where they register as being full of ink when actually there is no ink in the cartridge.

Gh some search and noticed that to clear power on password on lenovo G550 using ubuntu, despite removing the back up battery it dont do anything but it can be erased form the EEPROM but how to do it???

Unless you know the password it can not be removed, the only other option is replace the eeprom chip (available on ebay) but keep in mind this is a surface mount chip and is tiny and requires a high degree of skill to install.

3 orange flashes means flat battery. If you have a faulty charger or charger socket on the laptop then the battery wont charge or power up with just the charger connected.

Hi eseitz26,

For your G550 issue that no display will show on your screen after turning it on although all the lights are showing there are different reasons why you're getting this issue. The two most common issues are:

(1) The system just needed to be refreshed and reset the BIOS. Don't worry because resetting BIOS is just easy and you can do this on your own. Simply power drain your machine.

Here's how: Shut down your PC >> Remove the battery and unplug AC adapter >> Without any power source press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds (nothing will happen yet) >> Put back the battery and the charger >> Then, turn on your PC.

(2) The LCD cable from your screen going to the motherboard is loosed, that needed to be repaired or defective, and it needs replacement. For this one, you may contact Lenovo to give you options about the repair.

Well, in some rare cases screen might be also defective and needs replacement. You may also take a look on that possibility.

Tyr to power drain the computer, removed the battery and the unplugged the charger the press and hold the power button for one minute, obviously it will not turn on. Then after one minute, connect the laptop directly to the power outlet and then turn it on, if its still the same, theres a possibility that the problem is with the MOBO or the LCD itself

Lenovo G550 battery shows fully charged but when you unplug the laptop, the laptop shuts down and will not start up again until power cord is plugged back in.

Shows a clear indication of the battery to be faulty. So in the first place remove the battery and checck the voltage, now keeping the battery off the laptop, plug the adaptor to the mains, Now checck the voltage in the battery terminals which is in the battery compartment. If voltage is present then the battery is bad as it is not charging.
However if there is no voltage then the main board has a fault in the charging section which must be looked into.

Hi m529,

I see you are having issues with you G550 charging.

You mentioned that the light on the charger is lit up but then it suddenly switches Off, and you also mentioned that the charge still has a light but the power is somewhat low despite of a fully lit up charger Light.

Have you tried draining the power from the system?

Remove the battery and the Charger or AC Adapter as well call it from the G550 then press and hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds to drain power from the system motherboard.
Once drained connect the AC adapter but do not connect the battery yet, then turn the Laptop ON to see if the system will power ON using the AC adapter/Charger if it powers up then there is no problem with the AC adapter/charger.
After testing the AC adapter if it is working power down the Laptop doing a normal shut down.
Once shut down or turned Off insert the Battery back in the Laptop then turn the Laptop ON using the battery only without the AC adapter/charger see if the system will turn ON using the Battery only.
If the Laptop powers On using the battery alone with out the AC adapter then the battery is most likely working as well on the issue.
Now power down the Laptop then connect the AC adapter to the Laptop with the Battery in the Laptop as well then turn the system ON again see if the problem will Occur again having the battery and the AC adapter/charger if the Problem happens with both Battery and AC adapter on the Laptop then the problem is the Motherboard, most probably the motherboard is having issues relaying power from the AC adapter to the battery and may be sent to the Depot for repairs.

I suggest that you call Lenovo for further information about your system, if you still have warranty and is still in the one year period then your system will be covered for any repairs needed - you can call @ 1 877 453 6686 for troubleshooting, you will be asked for a serial number Located underneath the Laptop on a small white sticker that states s/n meaning serial number.

there is some problem with battery As
i have checked my charger is working but my battery is not charging?
my laptop is working on AC only
if disconnect charger Laptop will not work....
