Are you using the disk that came with the computer?
You need to go into your BIOS and set it up or have someone else do it.
You set it to default settings when changed the battery around. Set up properly, things should work correct.
Compaq only has a few settings that can be changed in the BIOS. Look through it and let me know if any of it confuses you. For some reason the default settings helped you load the system. Are you positive that the hard drive is not going bad? How about the memory? You can take them out one at a time to see if one is bad or not.
I looked up your system and found out that you has a diagnostic that you can run in DOS on your disk. PC-Doctor for DOS (Included on disc(s)) Run it and see what it tells you.
That system was also designed for Vista. The drivers for XP are not on your disk and the site does not have any either. You might not be able to get drivers for XP. You could possibly get lucky if you know every chip on the motherboard and can look up drivers that way. There might not be any XP drivers at all for that system anywhere. Some motherboard venders did not go through the trouble to build a new river database for older drivers. That system was just built last year. Have you tried to use the disk that came with the computer to load the VISTA O.S.? What XP disk are you using? Have you tried to hit F11 when the system starts up, to run test on the system or set it back to factory mode. That will be you best bet if you did not get a disk with the system.
This is your system Motherboard. HP even gives you the actual motherboard model. I have never seen that before from them.
Chipset
Intel G31 Express
Motherboard
This board below has your LAN driver.
Manufacturer: MSI
Motherboard Name: MS-7525
HP/Compaq motherboard name: Boston-GL6 http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=... You can try the link below to update the BIOS. Search for the BIOS with the MSI software. This will give the the correct BIOS Version. Do not manually install a BIOS update. ONLY USE THE ONE THAT THE SOFTWARE FINDS. [imghttp://www.smileyxtra.co.uk/images/smxtr...[/img]
You will make themotherboard not work if you install the wrong BIOS.
Only do this in Windows to be safe. You will need to be online to do this. So you will have to have network capabilities.
You can try this software for drivers. http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=...
You can also thry this link. http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=...
Try this Video Driver http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=...
I have searched several solutions for you. Let me know what does and does not work. It seems like Compaq has totally changed this boerd around from the regular specs that MSI originally designed for this board. This could be why you are having trouble.
Let me know if I can be of further help. I spent an hour so far helping you this time. I hope that I fixed your problem so this can be rated as a Fixya.

I presume you tried to downgrade to XP and Vista has a reovery partition on H/Drive
What I would do is install XP sp1 if you can do a full install with it then reboot with XP sp2 in and when choice comes up choose to d for delete xp sp1 and reformat in ntfs quick format and try to install
When I did this I had to use a full version of windows XP sp2 not an upgrade version
When I did and got it up and running I rebooted with a disk that had partition magic on it and wiped the disk clean and repartitioned it in to 2 partitions clearing all vista partitions backup etc
rebooted and reinstalled XP sp2 had no problems since
I had to go on net to find driver especially sound
With sound drivers download and install M/soft uaa drivers first
then device drivers upgrade sound went on net and found them
