My JD LA130 ran well but then it sat idle for almost a year because I was using my other mowers. ( I had a mowing biz for two years before cheaper services put me out of business) I needed to areate my lawn this past spring and decided it was a good time to do a PM on the JD even though it has only 46 hours on the engine. I replaced the battery, changed the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and did a general clean up of the mower. When I started it up I noticed that it was not running smoothly at all. It would run only if the choke lever was pushed forward equal to the throttle lever. I then noticed some moisture in the carbarator and stopped the engine and checked my fuel lines, and gas tank. Somehow water had migrated into the fuel tank so I drained the tank, disconnected and cleared the fuel lines, blew out the fuel pump and cleaned out the carbarator. After that I put everything back together, put fresh fuel in the tank, and started it back up. It ran but ran like it was starved for fuel. I checked the fuel pump and it working fine or seems to be but again after starting it up and running the engine for awhile I noted that both levers had to be set equally to keep it running. I never adjusted the throttle or the choke setting screws. I didn't want to mess with those. But the engine will not run as smoothly as it did prior to my PM. What must I do at this point?

SOURCE: not getting gas to the carb

There may a screen in the gas tank that is plugged. Drain gas from tank...inspect with flashlight. Clean screen with aresol carb cleaner and gently blow low pressure compressed air backwards through the fitting

When it shuts down crack the fuel cap and listen for the woosh of a vacuum on the fuel tank. If you hear this, clean the pinhole vent in the fuel cap, or replace it. Being partially plugged would cause you to be starved for fuel and could explain your issue, and why it goes away after a period of time.

SOURCE: john deere 425 mower won't start

The ignition switch module is likely to be the problem, they seem to quit for no good reason. The safety relays and fuses are built into the board that comes with the switch and will most likely fix your problem.

Blue or white smoke is oil or water. Fuel smoke is black. The rough running is dirt in your carb.

SOURCE: Stalls after 20 mins. of running fine. (Starving for gas)

From the rear of machine look at the top left of fuel tank for the fuel line.Where line comes out of tank see if it is pinched where it goes down between frame and tank, grab line and see if it moves freely. If that is OK loosen fuel cap after 10 minutes of run time to see if your vent hole in cap is working. These are 2 common problems for the L series mowers.

2004 JD X595. Has started and ran fine until last week. My brother was using the mower was turned off and would not restart. He jumped it and started fine. He then mowed for 10min and the deck shut down....

Sounds like a Charging system: alternator problem... have your Auto-zone check for your alternator if it is shorted...take the alternator off or haul the whole tractor to the store...they will run a free test...

Stay away from the 100 models, while cheaper, they are not built to endure. Given your prior experience with your JD, I gather you want something that endures. Cheaper models of all brands are sold at home service centers; and cheaper parts, smaller engines, etc. are used in their construction. In some instances, it is the difference between having plastic parts and metal parts. A JD dealership tends to have closeouts mid-August.

Just remember that most brands have a line of lower end models and if you select from such, you pay later! While I am old enough to be shocked by prices of riding lawnmowers, if you are looking for something of commercial strength rather than home, you will have to fork out considerable cash. JD's x300 line is noted for endurance but you may not like the price. That is why I have proved the above link. JD's are all made in the USA. A lot of other brands are as well but a lot are actually made by MTD and may not be of the quality you expect. You might take a look at a Simplicity zero turn mower but remember what I have said about buying at the lower end and from home service centers.

My JD riding mower just stopped during a recent mowing

There was a time when my JD just quit and did nothing. After doubting the battery that is what it was-the battery. Jump start your JD and if it starts up then your battery needs replaced.
