Press and hold the circle button down, after a few seconds it will flash 'beep on/off', dont stop holding it down, it will then cycle to 'units', press +/- to change between metric and imperial, then press the = button to store. If you keep holding it down you can set the reference pont (where the measurement is taken from, the back, middle or front edge of the machine) add an offset (add take away from the displayed dimension), and you can also reset the machine.

The optical lens of a laser rangefinder must always be kept clean for optimal performance.
The most common cause for a reduced range on this devices, is caused by dirty, or defective lens.
If the lens are dirty, on the outer or inner side, or they are opaque or defective, or there is wet inside the lens, than that is the cause for the sensibly reduced range.

Mike,
Leica does not sell replacement keypads, if the unit is less than 2 years old they will cover it under warranty. Contact the dealer you bought it from and they can handle the warranty exchange. If it is over two years old, it is out of warranty, but they offer a "repair" option, which will replace your damaged A3 with a new D3 for about $215. If you bought it from a reputable dealer, you shouldn't have any problem.
Hope this helps,
