Drain gas completely from tank to ensure no water is in the tank, check for spark with spark tester, if no spark shows with spark tester, re check gap on coil, if points & condenser are present, sand down the gap between the points to ensure a proper connection.
Make sure to change fuel filter with a high quality John Deere fuel filter and use fresh fuel... Fuel can "go bad" after 1-3 months, if the tractor is/ left outside chances are there is water in the tank.
The problem is either withe the coils or with the ignitors, the ignitors don't usually cause the problems that you're discribing but the coils can come and go as the temperature changes so i would start there.
A failing coil usually shows up during hot weather. The engine will start and run fine, then when it heats up, it just dies out. After a few minutes, it cranks again. Then the cycle repeats itself.
The ignition module and coil pack are the same part.
Are you sure full voltage is getting to the starter? There is likely a starter solenoid between the ignition key and the starter. These solenoids can be problematic and prevent the full 12 volts from getting to the battery.
You have a defective ignation coil. When the engine gets hot, the winding in the coil opens and the engine stops. After it cools down, it will again make contact and start again. If you don't know where the coil is, follow the wire from the spark plug. The spark plug wire is attached to the coil from the factory. It's easy to replace with a 1/4 inch socket set. Set the magnet to coil gap with a standard business card.
