I recently bought a webcam from 'computer gear' and its telling me i need the installation CD to download the software. i the webcam wont work without it, however IS working, because once plugged into the USB ports, the LED light comes on the webcam its self. it was a lot of money and i am concerned that i wont be able to use it, is there any website i could download the software from free? please help

have you tried to restart the computer since installing the software on the disc? also when you say the drivers failed to update are you trying to say that windows update failed to download new drivers? you shouldn't need to install updated drivers if the oem disc has them.

Please be informed that any hardware device needs a driver software to run within a PC, and the driver software depends on the Hardware Make/Model and the Operating System software you are using in your PC to operate it.You will get the Driver software of any hardware within the CD provided with the hardware part at the time of its purchase. The hardware may be an entire PC,Laptop,VGA card, sound card, LAN card,webcam,printers etc.

If you do not have the CD or misplaced it somewhere then you need to download the driver software to get going. Thus you need to know all the above information to get the exact software your PC needs. As you have not mentioned the Hardware Make/model and Operating System you are using, i am unable to give you the direct download link.
However you can download the same by visiting the 'software downloads' section of the website of the hardware brand you have purchased. You just need to Google the name of the brand and visit their website and search for the download section.

When plugged into a PC the software stored on the device itself should start an installer automatically. Your AV software may be stopping the autorunning of the installer as a security feature.

It may be that you have webcam mode selected in the options. I believe this will prevent the installer as well.

Reinstall you webcam drivers doing the following:

Unplug your webcam from your computer.

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Insert your webcam's manufacturer installation CD into the CD-ROM drive and follow the installation prompts.

Note: If the setup program doesn't start automatically within a few seconds, you need to manually start the installation process.
To manually start the installation process:

1. Click Start from the taskbar in the lower-left corner of your computer screen.
2. Open the Run window and type d:\setup in the text area.
   Note: The "d" indicates the path to your CD-ROM drive. If your CD-ROM drive is located in a different path, you need to replace the "d" with the correct path.
3. If you've downloaded the most recent software driver from the webcam manufacturer's website, run that installation program now.
   Note: Most webcam manufacturers maintain the latest webcam software drivers on the download or support areas of their website. Just download it and save it to your computer.
4. Follow the instructions provided by the webcam setup program.
   Note: Plug in your webcam USB cord only when prompted. (This is usually done after rebooting your computer.)

Disconnect webcam
Uninstall any webcam software
Restart your computer
Download your software from here
