The sound you hear, is it a whining, popping, grinding, scraping or rattling sound?
If you drive a manual transmission vehicle and notice a grinding noise, it can indicate the clutch gear is no longer disengaging correctly.
whirring sounds can be the alternator if it goes up and down with the engine speed. it also can be a damaged belt. on very rare occasions it can be a dry bearing in the engine...
I would try 3 things
1. when was the fuel filter replaced last? I would replace it if you don't know when and you may have ran into some bad gas. Replace it.
2. Same with the air filter.
3. Add fuel injector cleaner.
Hope this helps.

when you press the gas can you hear the engine accelerate if you can then that means it is your transmission if you cant it is your gas cable linkage just snap you can just replace it by removing your engine cover then add a small nut and tie it to the end of your gas linkage strech it in to the plastic arm and you can then use it to take to your mechanic to fix it properly
is your check engine light on? you may have a missfire meaning either a bad plug, plug wire or coil pack. if the engine light is not on, you may want to try changing your fuel filter, or possibly your fuel pump filters/ the pump its self.
