I use to have a Canon with the same issue as yours. Do you refill your own ink tanks? If so, that is the problem because they leak inherently after awhile. If they leak then your print head is probably clogged. Was this a gradual problem or did it occur all at once? That will make a difference in troubleshooting your problem. Another issue with Canon printers is that you have to use them often of the print heads will clog up after a period of time. Take a look at this video as well. It may help you!

I had the same problem, even when I only selected grayscale printing, my printer would use all 3 colors to make black, and my black cartridge would never get used. Try this:
On printing preferences change your Media Type to Transparency.
This should solve the problem and stop robbing your color tanks when you just want black

As a technician, I have worked on tons of printers. This particular error had stumped me for a while, but I finally found the cause. As others had pointed out before, it can have alot to do with some obstruction in the print path, the gears, or ink on the clear plastic encoder strip. You're on the right track - I found the the purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) was not lubricated well enough from factory. If you lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps) the mechanism can now slide more freely, and the unit can park the head properly without giving you the dreaded head homing error 5100 (or E-2-2 on the LCD display) Keep in mind that this repair will probably require you to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. There are two screws behind the printer, and two in front for each corrosponding side panel (the front screws are behind the grey front panel of the printer - open the top cover to see the clips which hold the front cover on) Hope this helps some of you out.

Sounds like the print head is no good. This happens. Here's a link to a site that sells them reasonably.

That is a common problem on all Canon printers, the purge assembly on the right where the printhead parks, has a pump inside and hoses that go to the filters and ink absorbers. When that unit goes out you need a replacement. A job best done in a shop. When the printhead is not cleaned and primed properly you get blank pages no matter how full the inks are.

Colour not printing. Check vent hole on cartridge not blocked by glue or bit of the orange tape, cleared mine with knife now works fine
