If the tractor has a Briggs engine, the code on the engine will give you the manufacturer date of the motor, most likely correlating with the model year of the tractor. Here is how you read the Briggs and Stratton engine code.

2008 Craftsman lawn tractor
Tip for 2008 Craftsman lawn tractor that runs for about 30 minutes then starts to cut out and dies, and will not restart. These tractors have a defective gas cap that will not vent. Simply remove gas cap and reinstall loosely. The best fix is replace gas cap. If your tractor is less than two years old Sears will replace it free. preview_graphic.jpg

Can not get parts for my 1995 Sears Craftsman Tractor model number 917.254860 ? Sears only carrys a certain kind of part what I need they do not carry .
Go to a small engine repair shop for your part.
Sears tractors are just other tractors (Mostly Murray brand )with the sears name on them......as are most others.
There are only 2 or 3 manufacturers making all the tractors.
Your part should be easily ordered there with your model and serial #.
