All you need to do is put back the hard drive to the gateway, theres like a finger print that block the hard drive to come on but if you put back to its own i will come on...if you want to make it work in the dell you need to install a fress os...period...

I have put new hard drive in - When booted up it says - Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

there can be two scenarios
1. the harddrive is not installed properly
2. the harddrive is not selected as the first boot device in the BIOS of the computer.

After you install new harddrive, you will have to reinstall the Operating System in the computer as well.

I have a dell optiplex gx 620 i install a new harddrive put the os cd in it said no boot device,i put in the dell boot cd it booted the computer up it got to A> prompt and stop loading what do i type in...

First put your Windows CD in the drive.

While booting, the screen should offer you a couple of choices - Enter "Setup" and tell you which keys to press or "Boot Options" and again which key to select.

Try Boot options first, and choose to boot from CD. It will revert next time you boot.

If you choose or have to enter "Setup" . Usually achieved by pressing the "Delete" or "F2" key look for and change your boot options to select you CD drive first but make sure you put it back later.

You may have to re-boot a couple of times to find the commands I mention, they do flash through fairly quickly.

I closed my business last month and my desk top dell dimension was networked with microsoft xp pro and i want to take the hard drive from that somputer and install it in my home computer which is a stand...

HI,
When you remove the harddrive from a computer and plug it into a different machine though of the same model. It would not boot, because the operating system product key is unique to the machine. If you want to use this particular hdd in your home system, make it a secondary harddrive or reload windows on the harddrive again. But doing so , you would remove everything from the harddrive.

I had new harddrive put in my dell 4600. now it freezes up sometimes it wont boot up. now technician says my motherboard is bad .it sometimes takes up too three tries too boot the computer up.. and now it...

I agree with the technician. Contact Dell, and order a replacement motherboard, and get the technician to remove the old motherboard, and install the new one -- it should *NOT* be necessary to reinstall Windows, if the replacement motherboard is identical to the original motherboard.

I want to have xp on my vista gateway laptop

Hello, Its really hard to downgrade from vista to XP on dell laptops. vista and XP use completely different drivers and dell has stopped writing drivers for XP. But still you can downgrade. You need to setup external SATA harddrive from where your XP CD should boot as it wont boot from your current harddrive that has vista. Even if you set these up and downgrade, Since dell has stopped writing drivers your new XP will not work with many new softwares and applications as you wont have drivers for them. I would advice you to use Vista. Good luck, Please rate the solution. ~regards, Jegan
