It might be the start solenoid, or the starter motor. Best way to tell is to Jumper across the heavy (High Current) solenoid terminals. If the starter turns, the solenoid is bad. If not, the starter is bad.

The best advice here is to put your battery on charge, and, while it is charging, remove each connection, and clean the terminals back to "bright and shiney". The clicking noise is probably the solenoid trying to pull in to provide power to the starter. There also sounds like the comnnection to the starter needs to be removed and cleaned. If this connection is dirty or loose, it can arc and smoke without cranking. Also, if the terminals at your solenoid are corroded, the motor cannot recharge the battery on the run, and loss of power to the battery will result. Clean your connections, and try again!
This should correct your issues. In extreme conditions, it may be necessary to replace your wire from the solenoid to the starter, if it is significantly deteriorated, but I'd clean it all up first.

Turn it in all the way gently until it stops then turn out 11/4 turns out.Then tou can fine tune from there.

the inside the card is plugged it needs to be removed and there is a pin sized hole in the brass bowl nut about a 1/4 of the way from the top i use 1 strand from a wire brush to clear them also all hidden pasages inside need to be cleaned with carb cleaner and checked with a compresed air source to make sure they are infact clear and flowing. a can of dustoff will work if you dont have a compressor

try and jump it direct to the starter the cables go bad and loose power threw them
