The govener is working rite and I have sprayed either through the carb when it was bogging and the engine did not pick up. I also checked the pulleys on the deck all turn nice and free. It seems to have all the fuel it needs and the spark seems rite Iam totaly out of ideas. Iam a boat mechanic by trade so I feel comfortable turning wrenches on this . Any ideas would greatly apprciated!!

hi I checked ,plugs and air filter both were good. It seems to have all the fuel it needs. I sprayed either in the carb when it bogged down and the engine rpm's didnt come up it actualy got worse. It seems to me like something in the ignition or timing something along those lines. I dont know how that ignition system works. last year I replaced the coils they both went bad within a month of each other. Very frustrating any other ideas would be great. Thanks

Hi,
make sure you have the correct plugs for it. spark plugs that are too short will cause a condition like that. make sure your air filter and fuel filter isnt clogged.

You might have sheared the flywheel key if you hit something hard. its usually under the flywheel bolt. they are made to shear off if you hit something really hard. it will run but not restart...

I thought about that or a loose or broken magnet under the flywheel. But the thing starts rite up and sounds good not missing at all. But it seems like when you put a load on the engine the engine almost dies. What it sounds like is you pull the throttle back on it. It doesnt miss it just boggs way down. Like it looses at least 50% power or more. Its like it needs the timing to be advanced. But isnt the timing fixed on those?

your best bet now would be to call a lawnmower shop and see if they know a trick or two. It sounds internal to me. usually Kohlers are trouble free but you might have gotten a dud.

I have heard mixed reviews for these engines. I have only owned a single cylinder kohler. my friend who has a small engine shop seems to always have one of these two cylinder jobs on his bench torn down....

Pull out the spark plugs their is probably oil or water in the well surrounding plugs. Cheap eaasy fix for water just dry it out. oil? Replace valve cover gasket .

Riding lawn mower

get a spark tester and plug it into one of the plugs after it gets up to operating temperature. test the other one if you have good spark plugs and no spark going through the tester the coil may be breaking down. and needs to be replaced.

Why

On 90 psi remove plug, Spray WD40 in cylinder, this will increase the compression for a short time and lube cylinder. Before doing this with both plugs removed try to start engine 3 times to let compression stroke blow out both cylinders. Then spay the wd40. Ensure the oil ha been changed this year!

When I check the compression on my 26 hp briggs and Stratton I get 90 psi on one and 120 psi on the other. is this ok or do I need work. I lose power on mower deck start up and thicker grass and up hill

no it is not ok. The low side will have a problem as they should be 120psi. It could be a head gasket but most probably will be incorrect valve adjustment hold a valve slightly open

My tomos revival ran fine then started losing power and droped in speed whay do I look for, plug is fine carb clean, air cleaner clean bike has 1200 senior miles

Hello
Well i always do the easier method to find out the problem.
hers a few things to do to determine whats wrong.
1st pull spark plug and do compression test, a blown head gasket will lose compression.
if the gasket is blown then the compression test will read a low psi and drop suddenly
2nd worn piston rings will lose compression, the compression test will read a very low psi below 100 psi and may leak right down depending on how worn the rings are.

that would make you lose power.
have it tested to see which it is.

either way, a lose of power in the motor is caused by lose of compression in the motor.
you can do the test your self, you can buy a compression tester pretty cheap, just make sure you don't cross thread the connectors.
have a good weekend

CHERRY RED EXHAUST!!

The engine is NOT burning clean and the exhaust gases contain unburned fuel which burns in the muffler. This could be a mixture problem or possibly a timing problem or maybe the exhaust valve timing is wrong or a burned valve or seating problem. Do a COMPRESSION test as a first step.

Have a 20 HP twin cylinder KOHLER engine on CRAFTSMAN mower.

If you are able...have someone do a compression check on the engine. Usually if a mower is loosing power and it is a twin cylinder engine, one of the headgaskets may be blown.
