My Sony Bravia tv has a problem with the screen getting dark on the right side. Sometimes the screen is normal, and then sometimes it goes dark and/or red. There is a small square (2 inches) that has a blurred picture in it. The tv is 3 1/2 years old, and the problem has been reoccurring for 3 weeks.

Contact the authorized service center for Sony. Please don't experiment with this set, anymore. You'll damage it beyond recovery.

These sets use for the most part two boards--each drives the screen on one side---also possible as suggested here the problem is inside the panel or where it connects to these boards--if inside the panel (the entire front screen unit) it is fatal as it cannot be got at and the display costs more than the set did new.

you should check its its inverter board. it may need replacement though.

It could be a power supply problem or an inverter board problem or something internal having to do with the backlighting of the unit. remove the inverter, and look at the back side and you will see a hot spot, now on the other side of that hot spot, re-solder the service mounted components and that should take care of your problem.

I'll say the t-con board is defective.

Magnetic fields don't affect lcd screens, unlike crt tvs where a magnet can cause problems. If it is only a slight difference i have seen this before even on my tv. if you go to a blank screen you can see patches of light and dark, they call this bruising, i have talked to sony engineers about this but i have not got a straight answer as to what makes this happen, if the tv is in warranty a tech will replace the panel, if it is not in warranty it is not cost effective to replace. But the good news is that is does not seem to get any worse with time, it is more of a manufacturing defect that most will not notice. Look at the tv with dark blank screen and you may see areas where the screen is lighter than the other. If you see this than you have this issue. it will fade off and will not be a stark line. Also I noticed that there is a software update for your television go to www.sony.com to get a download of the software, or sony will send it to you free of charge.

I have Sony KDL-32XBR9 and I have noticed a similar problem. When the picture is showing mostly black, for example during the ending credits of a movie, the TV will further darken the display. Once the picture lightens back up, the TV will adjust the brightness of the display back to normal. I just called Sony customer support and they indicated it was a firmware problem and they will be sending a USB device in the mail to update the firmware. Hope this helps.
