I would download www.iobit.com and use the free utility to sort your drive out and then you won't have to lose any information.

Cleaing out your recycle bin and deleting your browser history and cookies might speed it up a bit, but the other stuff you mentioned won't do much.

A good program for doing this is CCLEANER available free from CNET.COM at the following link:

http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/?tag=main;productListing

Just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information at the website indicated and download the software if you want.

Another good way to speed up your computer a bit for free is to DEFRAGMENT your hard drive.
Click on START.
MY COMPUTER.
RIGHT Click LOCAL DISK (C:).
Select PROPERTIES.
Select TOOLS tab.
Click on DEFRAGMENT NOW.
This process will take a while, maybe even an hour or two, but after it's done you should notice a difference depending on the condition of the drive at the start.

The best way to speed up your machine though, is to add RAM memory.

One easy way to find out for sure how much RAM your computer can hold is to go to WWW.CRUCIAL.COM and run their SCAN MY COMPUTER feature.

This handy utility will scan your hardware configuration and tell you exactly how much RAM memory you currently have installed and what type it is.

It will also tell you how many RAM slots are fitted on your motherboard and what the maximum memory capacity for each individual slot is, as well as the maximum total RAM that the motherboard can handle.

If your computer does have room to add more RAM, it will provide you with specific recommendations as to exactly what type and size of RAM stick to buy in order to maximize the memory capacity and performance of your computer.

Good luck.

Speed Up Windows XP in 5 Steps

Most of the times we observe that our system seems to gradually slow down. Here below i am listing five basic and easy steps
that can help you speed up your Windows XP computer.

1. Clear the Prefetch Folder :The Prefetch Folder contains files that keep getting stored on your computer whenever you launch any program or application. Deleting these files clears up space on your system that might have caused the slow down. Here is how you need to go about it.
Click Start..click Run..type Prefetch and click ok. The prefetch folder will open up. Press Ctrl and A together. This highlights the entire contents of the folder. Press the Delete key on the keyboard and confirm the deletion. Once done close the prefetch folder window. 2. Disable Startup Items: Certain programs get initiated in the background as soon as your system starts causing the system to slow down. These programs are actually not required on startup but because they get initiated it affects the system performance. Here below i am listing the steps to take care of this issue. Please note this step is very effective and
enhances your system startup speed significantly.
Click Start...click Run...type msconfig and click Ok.
The System Configuration utility window will open.
Click on the Startup tab on the top right. Click on the disable all button. Once done, in the list above, you will see many options with checkboxes. Please check any option that indicates your antivirus program software and internet service provider.
Click Apply and Ok. Please restart the system once.Once the system reboots you will get a message coming up saying "You have used the system configuration utility...." Please check the option below that says" Do not show this message again" and click OK.

3.Clear the Temporary Files Folder: Certain temporary files get created as a cache of our activity on the system. Clearing these files from time to time also improves the system speed. Below are the steps for the same.
Click Start..Click Run...Type %temp% and click Ok.The temporary files folder opens.Press Ctrl and A together. This highlights the entire contents of the folder. Press the Delete key on the keyboard and confirm the deletion. Once done close the folder window. Now right click on the recycle bin icon on the desktop and right click and select empty recycle bin

4.Clear Cookies and Temp Internet Files: As you browse the internet the images of the pages you view get saved on the system occupying space on the system. Clearing these files increases your system performance while on the internet.
Open Internet Explorer. Click on the Tools menu on top right. Click Internet Options. Click on delete button to delete cookies, files and browsing history. Click Apply and Click Ok.

5.Scan our system for infection: Your system might run slow in case its infected with virus, spyware, malware, adware, trojans etc. Here below i am listing a tool that you can download and run on the system Its free of cost and is very effective. I put some things in my recycling bin that I didn't want to and so I went in and hit restore all. But when I went to look for the files....they weren't there. How do I get them back? It is all my music.

By default windows only allocates a small percentage of space for the recycle bin, if you delete more than this things will be lost and cannot be restored.

It will usually same something like 'These items are too big to fit in Recycle Bin etc.'

You can try - http://www.piriform.com/recuva

which is a free undelete utility that will scan your disc for deleted items and allow you to copy them back to another drive.

Computer is slow

Optimize the Windows Recyle Bin
Do you often send a lot of junk files to your computer's recycle bin? It's nice to be able to delete your unwanted files quickly and with just a click of a button. One of the great features about the Windows Recycle Bin is that files aren't immediately deleted, so if you make a mistake, you can restore the files quickly. Despite how easy the process seems, it can be a pain dealing with the slowed performance speed of your computer if your recycle bin isn't properly configured.

Clear all temporary files stored in ur PC by typing " %temp% "(without quotes) in Run from start menu. It shows bulk of files, delete all those.

Then type "msconfig" (without quotes) it opens a window in that choose startup and uncheck the unwanted files to be loaded during startup.

Increase ur RAM memory if its very low.
if u find its not sufficient, reply me with specifications of ur PC. Surely i'll help u........

Windows Vista Ultimate: Recycle Bin

If you find that when your Recycle Bin does not refresh but shows the same icon, irrespective of whether it is empty or full, here are some trouble-shooting steps you can try. Hopefully, one of these 5, should help you. 1) Check if you have installed any Theme or an Icon Package, and see if uninstalling it makes the problem go away. if so then the problem is in the Theme or Package. Also try switching the theme to Windows Classic theme and them back to Vista Aero default. 2) Right-click Desktop > Personalize > Change desktop icons > Disable / Uncheck Recycle Bin. Then click Restore Defaults. Click OK. Reboot. Now using the same method Enable /Check Recycle Bin, then restore defaults. Click OK. Refresh Desktop. 3) In the 'Desktop Icons settings' Dialog Box, check on Recycle Bin.
Then click on the ‘Recycle Bin Empty’ icon.
Click on 'Change Icon' tab.
rom the new box which opens, select the icon that shows the 'Recycle Bin Full'.
Do the same for 'Recycle Bin Full' icon.
Change it to 'Recycle Bin Empty' icon.
Now click Apply.
Now check whether, when the Recycle Bin is full, the empty-icon show. And vice versa.
If it does, go back and again change back the icons, to what they should be, using the same procedure, mentioned above. 4) Use the Group Policy Object Editor.
Type gpedit.msc in Vista's Start Menu Search bar and hit enter.
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop > Remove Recycle Bin icon from desktop > Double click on it > Enable > Apply Reboot.
Next, follow the same above-mentioned steps. But this time instead of 'Enable' select 'Not Configured.
See if it helps. 5) Repair or Re-build the Icon Cache. For this the easiest way would be to download and use TuneUp Utilities or Stardocks Icon Packager. They are not freeware, but you can use the trial versions to get your job done.
