If the backup battery is bad it cannot save the bios info so it fails the checksum each time you cycle the power. Replace the battery and it should be fine. This is the coin cell battery on the motherboard, if it's a laptop it could also be a small battery pack.

Hi.

The most probable reason you are getting the bad checksum error is you have to set the date and time because you have cleared the CMOS and reset the BIOS.
You should also get a message that says press F1 to load defaults or press a certain key to access setup. Access setup (BIOS) and set the date and time. That should take care of the bad checksum error.
Another good idea is make sure the motherboard battery is not dead either.

This error is not the same as a CMOS Checksum Error, which refers to corrupted values of the CMOS settings, the ones you set through the BIOS setup program. This error means the contents of the BIOS code itself are damaged.

Find and fix errors in your system BIOS
BIOS Patcher can find and fix errors in your system BIOS (only AWARD BIOS for now) and also it can add or open new features, i.e. some features that your BIOS has but they are closed by manufacturer of your motherboard. It scans rom file. If it finds any known errors it fixes the errors. If it finds any closed features it opens it. hope this helps

Bios ROM checksum error (Compaq SR5237CL with M2N68-LA MB)

A BIOS checksum error can be caused by a nearly flat BIOS battery.
I would replace the BIOS battery first before attempting to upgrading the BIOS.
Some motherboard BIOS firmware is upgraded by running a program that has been copy to a DOS boot disk or the upgrage maybe done from within the BIOS setup. These firmware upgrage and instructions are on the motherboard WEB site, in your case the Compaq/HP WEB site. Make sure you select the upgrade for your model motherboard.
NOTE it is possible that if you make a mistake you could ruin your motherboard, if you are not sure seek help from a computer savy friend.

Checksum error

Hi Oliver, the most common error related to the message,
(Bios Rom Checksum Error). Someone has left a floppy disk in the floppy drive. Once the floppy disk has been removed press the reset button on the PC, your windows will start normally. Next place to look is in your bios.
Open your manual to page 27.
Enter your bios & go to the title Advanced BIOS Features. Check First, Second & Third boot devices they should be as follows. Floppy disk drive, CD-ROM drive & primary hard disk drive. If both of the above are ok than try clearing the cmos/bios by resetting the cmos jumper (JP1) location on page 5. Descriptions of page five on page 6. CMOS settings on page 9.
When your system restarts re-enter your cmos & reset up your bios settings. Lastly if none of the above has fixed the error message, than remove the cmos battery & check its voltage. It should maintain 3volts. If yours' is lower than 3volts replace the cmos battery. There is one other possible fix. It’s an option not given lightly. Flashing a cmos/bios is not recommended unless all other options have failed.

Checksum error

Hi Faster Fester. You don't need to install the new BIOS.

You get the checksum error just because you're CMOS battery have run out. Just try to replace the CMOS Battery and you're problem will be solved.
