Hi,

Yes the Sony should run Win 7 although its designed for XP. For Win 7 to run properly you will need to max out the memory to 2GB.
I have installed Win 7 on plenty of older laptops without any problems. You won't be able to use the aero glass features (see through taskbar and window borders) as the graphics chipset doesn't support that feature but everything should work well once you have enough memory installed.

Regards.

SOURCE: i want to disable sata

The problem is that XPinstallation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on adisk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then,XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS anddisable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is aIDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows hasbeen installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver),then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

Need hard drive for Sony Vaio VGN-FS742/W

If it's an IDE? Newegg has a 320GB. SATA can go much bigger, but Sony linked your model to a IDE hard drive.

I have a laptop that came with vista. i was duped into buying a bad copy of win 7. how do i go back to vista

There is no commercially avaliable way to rollback from Win 7 to Vista, the only way is to install Vista over the top of Windows 7.

VAIO VGN-FS742/W PC Notebook: i need to know how to restore factory settings wit...

Hi,

This Computer has Recovery Partition hidden in the Hard Drive. You can access the Recovery Partition using the VAIO Recovery Wizard or pressing the F10 Key while restarting the Computer.

The System Recovery will restore the Computer back to the factory defaults and all the data in the Computer will be lost.

  1. To access the VAIO Recovery Wizard, please click "Start", All Programs" , VAIO Recovery and VAIO Recovery icon.
  2. Then, in the VAIO Recovery Window, please select the "Restore C: Drive" option.
  3. Then, in the Restore C: Drive window, click to select the I understand box.
  4. Then, click the Next button.
  5. After the bundled applications are installed, under Restore C: Drive (Step 4 of 4) , click the Finish button.
  6. The computer will restart and the operating system setup wizard will begin.
  7. Please follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup wizard.

VAio VGN-FS742 Screen does not display

Try to remove the battery, remove AC adapter, and press and hold power button for 45 sec. reinsert battery, and Plug and try again, if that doesn't solve it, you may need to try to change memory first, (cheapest) or the motherboard or CPU.

Please give good rating if this helps your issue, Thanks
