I am having problems with my 18v porter cable cordless drill. I have had it for two year and have rarely used it. Only used one battery. Now I am unable to charge either of the batteries. They are lithium. Not sure if they can be left uncharged for long periods? One battery was flashing red light, which according to code on charger means the battery is bad. The other had no indication at all on the charger. Is there a fix or do I know need to go out and buy new batteries? Since I rarely use the drill motor should I buy Ni Cads instead of the Lithium ones?

seems to be a problem with Porter cable. The older chargers are for either Ni-Cad or Lithium batteries, but not both. The new charger will charge either one. It will say on the top of the unit. PCLMVC is Lithium only . PCXMVC is either one. I put my brand new unit away for a few months and their is a brief flash of light from the chargerand then nothing. Two new batteries will not charge.

Do not try to repait the battery. There is a possibility you could fix it but don't try it. Acid is not friendly on humans body.
go out and buy new batteries for it. I would suggest you buy the type of battery it came with.
One more thing; Make sure you remove the battery and store it in a normal temperature area anytime it is not in use.

Please rate if this helped you.

Do you work for Porter Cable ? If uou don't use your battery often enough that it discharges just shell out 70 bucks a piece since they haven't fixed the problem with the product? It's super easy just pull the case apart check voltage if it's low use a AA connect + to + and - to - with jumpr wires a few seconds to get enough charge that the battery is recognized. Battery acid is bad so don't open the case with a grinder or axe.

It's best to not allow lithiums to sit with less than 30% charge.

Long term storage at temperatures exceeding 25C (80F) will reduce life.

Fuse for Porter Cable PCMVC T2

It is not q cost effective repair. I understand your wanting to repair it. I have disposed of several 18V tools because of the cost of replacement batteries. I found it a better solution to watch for sale and buy a new tool with 2 batteries and charger. Good Luck.

I bought the porter cable lithium 18v hand drill around November 2010. I have used the drill 3 times. One of the batteries will charge and one of the batteries will not. When I attach it to the charger...

This is common on all brands. If the battery is dropped or gets to much moisture in it , it will ruin it. You don't know how many times it was dropped or slammed around during shipment or on the store shelves.

18v nicad charger blinks short on battery on both batteries

Probably both batteries are dead. Unusual for both to go at the same time but that sounds like the problem.
