Not sure what unable to connect means..but I will assume you have the correct cable.
First make sure you have plugged the from the HDMI cable from the DVD play into the IN 1 HDMI port on the back of your Onkyo
On the Receiver
Enter the Setup mode
Select INPUT OUTPUT ASSIGN
Next make sure the HDMI monitor out is set to YES on the Receiver
Monitor out
HDMI Monitor - YES
Next you need to assign the HDMI INPUT to DVD
Select INPUT OUTPUT ASSIGN
HDMI INPUT
DVD - IN1
CBL/SAT - IN2
This may be your issue.
Next step would be to verify your television input settings.
Nice receiver!
Best of luck!
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.. out all day.
I think your issue probably has more to do with the DVD player than the receiver.
If you can get to the DVD player menu and it has a output setting..make sure it is set to "through".. so it will pass the signal straight through the Onkyo with no manipulation.
On your next response.. include make and model of DVD player
Hang in there!
I could not get to the dvd player menu to do what you suggested.
It's a samsung bd-d5700 blu ray player.
Appreciate any further pointers.
You have a handshake problem for sure.. the Onkyo you have is able to pass through any current format signal sent to it.. including 1080P..
A few things worth trying.
Turn on the receiver first then the DVD then the TV.. it may resolve minor handshake problems
Cables. use decent quality and short.. doubt this is the issue
Reply with you television model number.. and age.
Some sets are not able to receive 1080P 24FPS.. it may automatically adjust or the DVD may be able to ajdust it's output when connected directly.. but the extra handshake with via the receiver may interfere with that process.. so you would need to turn off the 24fps or set the1080P to 1080i output on the DVD player. You could do this by connecting the DVD player directly to the tv via composite cables.. while leaving the HDMI cables in place.. this way you can see the menu options.
Hang in there!
thanks for your tips.
I turned off 24fps and set dvd player output to 1080i and it worked.
Your time and help is greatly appreciated!

Let me clarify. I am able to connect the hdmi cables appropriately.
What I am having problem with is the error message "Incompatible video input received"
when the blu ray output goes to the receiver and the receiver connects to the TV (all via
HDMI).
When I directly connect the blu ray player to the TV everything is fine. This means there
is some setting or incompatibility between the blu ray player and the receiver, and was looking for advice to help fix.
Appreciate the responses in advance.
