The first thing you should look into is the Z-SUS board, the one situated on the right side viewed from the rear. This board develops a high voltage during operation that might be the source of the popping sound. It is also responsible in refreshing the panel for proper picture display. The weird colors on your TV indicates a faulty Z-SUS board.
Note: Unplug the TV and wait for at least five minutes in order to allow the voltages to drain before you disconnect or reconnect any connector.

Y Sustainer problem. However, normally they have to change both Y Sus and Z Sus boards at the same time. If you lucky than it's just a fuse on the Y sustainer blown (the chance is very rare) otherwise the IPM (Intelligence Power Module) on the Y/X sustainer board is short. more then likely if you can get the IPM off of the board you will see that the components are shot, that is the popping noise you heard. shopjimmy.com has these boards some are cheap some are not...good luck
