Frost build up on back panel. 3 weeks ago used hair dryer to melt ice behind panel that was on the coils. Now we are getting frost on the coils and the top of the freezer door. Refrigerator section is now noticeably warmer. help

The defrost circuit has failed in your fridge. Typical failure is with the defrost heating element. To troubleshoot, you need to remove the remove the contents of your freezer section and remove the freezer back panel to access the evaporator coil. You will need a hair dryer to melt the ice on coil. The heating element is attached to the coil. Use a meter to confirm that the element is bad. Hope this helps you.

you need to have someone check the defrost circuit. if the unit does not defrost properly , ice will accumulate on the back panel where the evaporator is, blocking the evaporator fans completely, and the circulation fan will eventually stop working because the ice buildup contacts the blades all the fan motor, and eventually the refrigerator compartment will start to get warmer and warmer because there is no circulation of cool air.

The defrost heater has gone bad causing a heavy frost to build up and not allow the cool air to circulate properly. Remove the lower panel in the freezer at the back. 4 screws, 2 at bottom and 2 at top and then pull panel out. Using a hair dryer melt all ice off of the coils and the heater at the bottom of the coils is what is bad. wr55x10101 should be the part number and by melting all of the ice today you will buy yourself 4 to 5 days of proper cooling with the controls set in the middle settings. Also gives you time to get the heater to replace it. Very important thing tho is to replace the back panel after getting all ice out so that the fan can do it's job properly. Not a hard job to do but because of having to melt the ice it is time consuming. 45 min. to a hour. Good luck and have a great day. Rick

If the freezer is getting a lot of frost on the back wall you have a defrost problem going on. This will be 1 of 3 things. The defrost timer, the defrost t-stat which is attached to the evaporator coils, or the defrost heater. To remove all ice from coils you will need to remove inside back panel of freezer and gain access to the coils. Then using a hair dryer you will need to melt all ice off of the coils. Usually the problem is the defrost t-stat. a round disc like item with 2 wires going to it attached to the evaporator coils. Good luck and thanks, Rick

Option1: Unplug refrigerator and wait for it to melt. This will take a long time.

Option 2: Remove the rear and bottom panels from the freezer. Carefully chip away the ice. Use a hair dryer or hot water to melt the ice in the coils and drain.

If the ice builds up quickly again, test the defrost circuit and repair as necessary.

If your model is doing that I would consider looking at the defrost components. Look inside back of freezer for frost building a thin layer on the rear wall. If yes then unplug and remove the rear panel in back of freezer and defrost with a hair dryer. You have and air circulation problem or a defrost problem. Sounds like it's trying to defrost but we need to have a look at the evaporator coils in the rear behind that cover. First let me know what you find and we will go from there, Thanks Sea breeze

Sounds like your auto defrost is not running long enough to melt the ice that develops on the coils. You can easily fix this problem by using a hair dryer and removing the back panel in the freezing unit to reveal the coils. Once this panel is out use the hair dryer to melt the ice. Once the ice is cleared this should restore air flow across the coils. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hi: The fact that it still makes ice tells me the freezer is a zero degrees. When you said condensation in the freezer did you mean frost? If your defrost heater fails it will cause the frost free freezer to build up frost. The frost will build up and block the vent that supplies the cold air to the fresh food. The defrost heater is behind the metal wall at the back of the freezer, at the very bottom. A glass tube with a metal coil in it. The coil can break and stop the defrosting. Replace that. Use a hair dryer to melt the frost from behind the panel. All of it top to bottom. You need to remove all the frost to free up the airways. I hope this helps, Jeff

You have an automatic defost malfunction. There is a timer (or circuit board) which controls the run and defost modes of your refrigerator. Once in defost, there is a heater that comes on to melt frost behind back panel. Once a certain temperature is reached behind the panel, a defost thermostat (or bi-metal) cuts off the heater. This maintains your frost-free operation.
