Place the vacuum cleaner in the vacuuming position with the wheels in normal rolling position. Slip your 4 fingers excluding your thumb into the hole located next to the nozzle(where this hose connects to the main body). Yank straight up and the bag compartment will open.
OMG, thank you so much. The unhelpful manual says to hold it on end and press on the open area, but the top is too rigid. You really need the strength afforded by your method, and really firmly PULLING straight up with full force to overcome the resistance. I'm now going to write these instructions on the vacuum in permanent ink!
