Question about Generac Power Systems Generac 5793 Ix 2000 Watt Portable Inverter Generator

I have a generac ix 2000: the problem is no spark, the trigger asy was bad, replaced with new one the ignition coil reads 1.9 ohms spec 1.7, spark plug to grnd 12.14k spec 12.5. ignition coil winding 0,9 ohms spec 0.7. replaced led module with new one. still no spark. help. thanks paul

    i am not shure which ground wire (black) you proposed to check?
    the ignition coil is mounted on the plastic housing and is fired by the trigger
    coil mounted under the plastic engine cover on the out side of the fly wheel
    the trigger coil is set at 0.010. the the magnets are very strong. this is a wierd problem.
    maybe this will help the diagnostics?

    i have a generac ix 2000. the problem is no spark. the triger assy was defective replaced with a new one which reads 134 ohms spec is 129 ohms. the ignition coil 1.9 ohms spec 1.7.
    spark plug lead to ground 12.14k ohms spec 12.5. ignition coil winding o.9 ohms spec 0.7. also replaced the led module.still no thanks paul

    the oil sensor is disconnected.
    i might add sll measurements were made to ground.

    i also have many years with small engines:
    this gen is not a conventional ignition sys:
    this is a chalange and i will keep on it for a bit more
    before i call generac. the triger assy only has one wire
    the grnd side is part the mounting.

    i wont get back to the gen till the weekend i will keep u posted

    i cant say there is a overload or not every thing in the inverter assy is potted and no schematic
    the trigger assy has oly one wire to it the other connection is the mounting
    low oil senser i disabled
    i am putting the problem in generacs hands i will let you know what is resolved

You engine has a low oil level sensor. If the oil level is low or..... the sensor is bad it will ground the ignition from the coil with the engine switch on. For troubleshooing only disconnect ONE wire from the sensor AFTER you make sure the engine oil level is properly serviced. Then check for spark.

    Paul you have done all the correct things as far as parts replacements and measurements. All the readings you passed were good. Distances also. The only thing that can cause the problem now is a ground off the ignition unit black wire. Do what you have to to isolate that wire with the plug removed and test the spark. If you still don't have spark at that time I don't know what to tell you. I have been working on small engines for over 40 years. The biggest reasons for no spark are

    1. Grounds in the magneto / ignition unit areas

    2. Failed Ignition units

    3. Low oil pressure sensors and wires... the only time you should read a ground is with the ignition switch ON and the engine NOT running / no oil pressure. If there is a short before the low oil level sensor this can kill your ignition.

    4. Spark plugs

    5. High tension lead shorted where it passes through the cowling.

    Hi Paul,

    Another train of thought: Maybe we are looking in the wrong area all together. This unit has an overload shut down relay on it also. There just might be a problem with the overload relay and wiring. I don't have the schematic for this particular generator sure would not be hard to figure out. I am just thinking after everything you have done it should have spark but... we totally forgot all about the overload trip relay. I think we should focus on that aspect in future troubleshooting.

    Paul... disregard my last post. I actually have the wiring diagram for this generator in pdf format. First off there is NOT a shut down relay on the diagram at all. I see the ignition sensor on the diagram... (your right seems to be a beast of a different breed) I am really not supposed to do this but if you pass an email address I can send you the diagram. I can not post mine here.

It sounds as though there is an issue with the carburetor. If the unit is "surging" with no load I would recommend thoroughly cleaning the carb. It would also be a good idea to test the fuel pump. Per Generac you need to disconnect the fuel line leading to the carb and pull the starter rope over to see if adequate fuel is flowing. If none of this is the issue try testing the stepper motor on top of the carb. If you unclip the wire and use an OHM meter all wires should test at 150 ohms. to test place on test lead on the blue wire and move the other lead to the remaining four wires. The should all ohm out to roughly 150ohms. if this is not the case you need to replace the stepper motor.... Before you do any of this you should check for fresh fuel, a good spark plug, and proper compression.

1998 dodge stratus 2.5 s.ix cyl. no spark. only 4.09 volts coming from orange and green wires on distributor no voltage from feul injecter wires.

check the ignition coil or coil pack of their resistance,
primary must have 1.0 ohm to 0.5 ohms(tolerable).
secondary are between 900 ohms to 12,000 ohms

Generac ix 2000 does not start. checked spark plug and it is good. oil good.

what a **** generator, worked for 100 hours and now wont start anymore.
did all the checks and replacing of spark plug and oil etc, simply wont start, ****, ****, ****..... service is horrible too. they just give you the runaround.

2001 Kawasaki VN 1500 Vulcan Classic no spark

Hi, Thomasyaryan and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Open-short-ground in the wiring between the alternator to the ignition module/CDI box to the ignition coil.
5. Faulty pins or sockets in the plug connectors.
6. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting/leaking, spark plug cable connections loose check for spark leakage in the dark.
7. Faulty ignition coil or electronic control module/CDI box.
8. Faulty pulse coil.
9. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
10. Faulty ignition switch.
11. Faulty run/off switch
12. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
13. Security alarm failing to disarm needs reset

My 1999 buick lesabre will not start. I have gasoline and the battery is good.

Hmm, do you have spark? fuel pressure must be between 30 - 40 psi test the ignition coils by connecting an ohmmeter between the coil towers ie 1and 4 with the key in the OFF position do the same with the others as well there are 3 coils all should have readings between 5 an7 thousand ohms if so the secondary side of the coils are good, if there is no spark at all try an ignition module. this is under the 3 coils they sit on the ign module..You can also test and or replace the spark plug wires, if a wire is 10 inches long it should read 10,000 ohms or less.. No more than 1000 ohms per inch is the spec.. hope this helps good luck

If you have a volt/ohm meter, you may want to first ohm check the resistance between the two spark plug towers on each ignition coil pack. Simply remove the spark plug wires from each coil pack and test. Both (if good) should test about the same resistance, (about 5-7 kOhms, but I don't have the exact specs handy on this particular vehicle. The reading may be higher, maybe around 7-12kOhms) but nonetheless, the reading of the 1-4 coil pack should closely match the 2-3 coil pack. If not, the new coil pack may be faulty and should be returned for a replacement.

Also, when you remove the 1-4 coil pack, take a look at the primary spade connectors (2 lugs) coming out of the ignition module. Make certain these are clean and free of rust or corrosion. If so, simply (and gently) use a finger nail file or 400 (or equivilent) sandpaper to file the corrosion off and re-attach the coil pack.

If one or both of these don't fix the problem, you may have to look at replacing the ignition module. But only do that after exhausting the other simpler and less expensive tests! :)

Fresh rebuild now no spark

If it ran before, I would double check your electrical connections. Its more likely you didn't get a connector pushed all the way together or left off a ground wire. The ignition coil specs are generally 1 ohm or less on the primary (small Wire) side, and 5K-10K ohms on the secondary (spark plug) side. Each side should be tested to ground. Pick-up coils are typically open or really large ohm reading in Megaohms normally and around 100 ohms when the magnet on the flywheel passes by. there is no way to test the CDI box other than putting it on a know running bike or getting a known good CDI and putting it on your bike. Double check that the spark plug cap is secured to the high tension lead as well. Testing the stator is a little more complicated, but a quick way is to close the gap on an old spark plug to about 0.010" and see if there is a week spark. If so, the stator will need to be replaced.
