New purchase Traeger 07E and after reviewing the forums I am still stumped. My digital timer is on P2 and at 225 degrees it will swing from 210 to 270, sometimes on my maverick wireless i have observed it continuing to climb, i let it go and it was above 400 degrees. Forget it on smoke, it gets hotter than it does at 180 degree setting. I am perplexed, I read where some other MFG units swing less than 5 degrees and hold the temp settings. Help!!! James Alvin, TX

It is time/weight based programming not PID. You can still cook just fine in this range. Just watch your internal temps closely.

Why does my Traeger Smoker not hold temperature.

The Traeger has no thermostat, it works by approximating how often the auger needs to push pellets into the fire box. If the temperature is within 20 degrees, Traeger considers that within range. If you live somewhere with extreme weather, this could affect your Traeger's performance. If it's cold outside, set the Traeger to a higher temp (or get one of their insulating blankets). If it's hot, set the Traeger lower. I hope this helps.

Traeger grill not smoking

This is a common complaint about Traeger grills. Some people have resolved it with smoke pipes which contain pellets that smolder during the cooking process.

Others use different pellets than Traeger pellets but they void their warranty when they do. For me, Traeger pellets seem to put out enough smoke at the low temperatures I use (less than 200 degrees) but if I get above 200, the smoke goes sway.

When I cook pork shoulders, I try to keep the temperature at 180. In ideal conditions the Traeger will fluctuate between 160 and 200, averaging 180. If I can maintain this low-slow cooking temp-speed, I get a good smoke ring and decent smoke flavor.

If I get above 200, I lose much of the flavor but usually have a smoke ring though not as intense as at the lower temps. There are lots of conversations about this on blogs at the Traeger website and at the Pelletheads website.

What is the mormal temperature swing of a Refrigerator?

What you call temperature swing, is hysteresis. For a refrigerator it only is allowed a few degrees. 1 or 2 up and down. A swing from 32 to 45 is far to big. Unless the factory can prove they advertise these figures. I would never buy a frig like that.
I would contact the dealer and ask him / her to replace the thermostat and if that is not possible to bring another refrigerator.

Something is really wrong with yours.

On smoke setting my temp goes up over 300 degrees

Traeger suggests realignment of the augur for grills that are not getting hot enough. I wonder if this might be the same solution for grills that are getting too hot.

Here's their solution which I copied from the Traeger website at http://www.traegergrills.com/.

I've been noticing that my grill temperature keeps dropping lower. What is the problem?

You need to "true" your auger. To do this:

  1. Run the unit out of pellets.
  2. Remove the allen screw and nut out of the auger and motor shaft.
  3. Try spinning the auger shaft over the motor shaft. The auger shaft should spin freely over the motor shaft without binding.
  4. If the auger binds, loosen the 7/16th inch bolts on the motor bracket and move bracket until you can rotate the auger shaft over the motor shaft. Then re-tighten 7/16th inch bolts. Make sure auger shaft still rotates over motor shaft, or repeat step 4 again until it does.
  5. Reattach auger and motor shafts using the screw and nut which you removed in step 2.
You might want to contact Traeger at their website to verify that this is a solution for overheating. In the above case, the improperly aligned augur was not dropping enough pellets in the firepot. In your case, it sounds like it may be dropping too many. This sounds like a routine maintenance thing that ought to be done periodically anyway.

Traeger fan working intermittently

It's supposed to cycle on and off depending on your settings. Are you sure something's wrong? Does it keep its set temperature within 15 degrees either way? If so, it's working fine.

Thermostat with huge temp swing

It is normal for a thermostat to have a 2 to 3 degree swing, any tighter and it will tend to cycle the heat and cooling ssytem on and off, very hard on equipment.
You can purchase a digital electronic thermostat, the higher end thermostats will allow you to close the swing down to 1 degree, just remember the above, that I stated.
You will need to read the install and owners manual, to figure out how to change the temp swing.
If this has been helpful, please rate the new guy :)
Please get back to me, if you have anymore questions.
Have a great Day.
