My amana bottom freezer was not getting cold enough to keep things frozen. I had a repair man out who replaced the dryer unit and put gas in it, After they left I noticed a sweet smell and after several days I an still noticing this sweet smell in various places in my house. Is this a gas leak or someting else? and is it toxic?

SOURCE: Ice build up in freezer

Defrost system failure.

Defrost timer, heater, therma disk, any one could be bad.

You could manually defrost and this would get the Ref back to working for a couple of days before it iced up again. Remember there is a lot of ice build up on the cooling coils in the freezer that you can't see so, a little extra time with a hair dryer is needed to do a complete manual defrost.

yes the evap fan in the frezer should be running when the compressor is running[it may not for a minute or so as it starts up.Amana's are good for the connectors at the evap fan motor comming apart.the connectors are white and will look like its together but when you pull it will come apart.i would always cut the connector out and use a wire nut so wont happen again.if any other questions please email thru FixYa and i will be glad to help. SOURCE: Control board reset?

Amana version of adaptive defrost : Press refrigerator light switch five times in six seconds to initiate defrost cycle. Pressing five more times within six seconds will cancel defrost and go straight into the run mode. Similar operation on both bottom mount and SxS refrigerators. After the defrost terminator/thermostat opens, six minutes of dwell time occurs before the compressor and condenser fan motor will operate. After defrost terminator/thermostat open, 10 minutes of dwell time occurs before the evaporator fan motor will operate.

SOURCE: amana bottom freezer problem

It sounds like the condenser coil might be freezing up. This happened to me on my bottom freezer. The cooling part of your fridge is only in the back of the freezer compartment. The cold air from the freezer blows up through a vent in the back to the fridge and comes out at the top. If the coils do not defrost (which is what happened with mine) the air flow is blocked by the ice and can't get to the fridge compartment. Your freezer will still be cold but your fridge won't. If you pull the plug on it and time things right you can defrost the coils but this will only postpone the problem. Both will work for awhile again until the coils ice up again. You can also pull out the freezer drawere and try to defrost the coil with a blow dryer. You have to disconnect the icemaker and pull out the back panel behind the freezer to get to it though.

Hello Nicole,

Their are a few things that couldbe causing your refrig.troubles.

1) their is ice build up in the return air vents that is not allowing air to flow correctly
you can see the air vents under the crispers in the ref.floor and can see if they
blocked with ice.

2) the freezer fan is bad and not circulating cold air into and out of the ref.

3) In addation to the defrost timer, perhaps the deforst heater and defrost thermostat are bad and frost is building up in the freezer,Do ya see frost
build up in the freezer??

Frost is building up in bottom freezer. Amana ABB2224DEW

I have this problem as well, only nobody is leaving anything open. The defroster is defective of these things and the duct between the fridge and freezer gets frozen over and the cold air can't get in the fridge, so the freezer keeps working until it's blue in the face.

Freezer door won't slide open

A tightly frozen door could take days to unfreeze inside. Try using a hair dryer around the door seal. It will take awhile to unfreeze the door this way but it is quicker than waiting for it to defrost. You may have had an extreme leak. Turn the water off to the freezer and turn the freezer controls off or set to zero. You are in a pickle! This is not going to be a quick fix.

Amana refrigerator not cooling

My concern is that the refrigerator is showing a more serious problem. The fact that the service man is not using the time to fix the refrigerator would have me angry. If the refrigerator is under warranty and you are losing food is another reason to complain! Being under warrant I cannot offer advice other than get on the phone and express your complaints to the distributor and the manufacture. Usually this will help get your repair issue motivated.
