What size area rug are you asking about?
A kirby shampoo but do not use this shampoo but
an all purpose cleaner with extra vinegarwater and use that only if you have an old shiraz kind of rug, but be aware do not use the kirby principal NEVER for silk rugs because thats asked for a special cleanable procede by perchloric steam cleaning by industrials with a special accommodation because thats asked a very delicate handling because this kind of rug with a very high knot density and many colors that can changed that you never also can good deepclean without. sometimes many delicate colors that you will harm by cleaning rugs and carpets with a brushroller which unfortunately is not suitable for very expensive oriental silk rugs

Don't use a washing machine to wash a rug. Use a steam cleaner after shaking the rug out outside. A rug may damage your washing machine.
