New, 1 year, boiler unit makes loud banging noises (in pipes) throughout house all night long. What could be the cause? Thanks, Cathy

F1 means burner is at fault ,lack of pressure, best to call viessman or the installer back as if its a new boiler it has a five year warranty

The noise you refer to is called Kettling, it is caused by the hot water in your boiler not being able to leave the boiler quick enough, if the problem developed quickly and your system is a "fully pumped " system this would generally point to your pump either has failed or is on its way out, i.e . your radiators would not heat up as the hot water is stuck in the boiler hence the banging......( if you know where the pump is you can generally feel if it is running by a small vibration ) if you have gravity hot water and pumped heating circuit then I would assume that it is noisy when just doing HW, and the banging is a problem that has gradually got worse it can indicate that the boiler is scaling up (are you in a hard water area). if this is correct there are various additives that can be put in the system to help quieten it down, I suggest you really need a heating engineer to diagnose fully.

CHECK LIST

- is the BTU'S enough for the space
- is there proper flow through boiler
- should have 20'F-30'F difference between inlet and outlet temp
- is there air in the system
- is there a lock on via controls that is set to lock out under 20'F
- no matter what if boiler is working properly it should be able to maintain 20-30'F temp difference from inlet to outlet
ex. 60'F in, 85'F out = 25'F split boiler is working right, if temps do not rise means house insulation my be so bad BTUS calculated for the coldest conditions was to low

Probably heat trap nipples, or other constriction in pipes.

Install air chamber to cushion sudden-stop of flowing water.
Water flow coming to sudden stop is called water hammer, and will bang pipes, but also loosen plumbing joints, causing leaks.

Air chamber has to be vertical, and about 18" long, with cap on top.
By code each Hot and Cold line at each tap will have air chamber located behind the wall. So there are two air chambers at each tap.

In your case, you can probably add air chamber to your Hot and Cold lines and solve problem for both dwellings.

Water hammer is caused because water does not compress like air.
So when long column of water suddenly stops... the whole pipe-full of water comes to sudden halt... and that water could weigh 1-1/2 pounds ... and just like a hammer head moving, the weight of water bangs the pipes to dissipate energy, causing noise.

first check for loose pipes the you might want to add a damper on the pipe to absorb the hammering just t in a piece of pipe and make it go higher than the pipe with the noise and put a cap on topp of that

air in the system, bleed the boiler and bleeders at radiators

Hello,You need to install a domestic/high pressure extrol/expansion tank on your cold water pipe.Should slove noise.

3/4 pipe from gas meter or regulator. At low pressure there may not be enough gas flow through a smaller pipe for the boiler when on full bore.
The boiler input pipe will be 1/2" needing a reduction from 3/4 so there is some leeway.
I have about 8' of 1/2 pipe on mine [Bosch Worcester] from the reg. and it is ok.
You could use the existing 1/2 and try. No harm done if insufficient-just replace. If you have some other gas takeoff on the same line a 3/4 pipe up to that take off is most likely.

Other than the stench of fuel oil permeating every soft surface throughout the house, there are numerous health hazards associated with exposure to petrochemical vapors. Shut the unit off until you can get it repaired.
