I have an Amana top freezer refrigerator. It has a putrid smell coming from the freezer!! I have emtied and cleaned the drip pan under the coils. I have emtied, defrosted and cleaned the fridge using a very good disinfectant. I have vacuumed the coils thoughly. I have done everything I can think of to rid it of this smell. Still the smell in the freezer is just as strong when I turn it on.

SOURCE: I cannot get to the drip pan under refridgerator to empty it. It is filled with sludge and smells bad

Thank willie for helping with one: "Well, it looks like the pan is a seperate plastic pan and not the compressor mounting pan like some of the newer ones are. It appears that you have to remove the condensor fan motor and mounting bracket then maybe the pan will left up and over the compressor, or maybe there is enough room to lift the pan up and out the front over the condensor coils"

SOURCE: Overflowing drip pan under the fridge

for reallybsq
problem could be door seals not sealing completely and hence excessive ice formed on evaporator and excess water when it melts. however, i have found this problem many times with large larder fridges and really found no cure.

for guest.
towards the bottom of the back wall, there is a gulley with a drain hole in the middle. this drain is blocked. clear it with something flexible and make sure water flows away freely

SOURCE: have an amana refrigerator model BC121VW bottem freezer

In the back of the refrigerator, there should be a vent. Put your hand over it and see if air is coming out. This will tell you if the fan the other poster mentioned is working. If no air is moving then either the fan is bad or the channel is plugged. If only a small amount of air is moving through, open the freezer door and check the air flow again. If the flow got much better, then the return channel is plugged. Try these steps, and if they help post back and I will tell you what to do next.

Foul smell coming from behind the refrigerator. I smell it coming through the fan on the back of the refrigerator. I believe it could be the drip pan, but I don't know where it is located. Also, my...

the drip pan is usually on top of the compressor or has a draw underneath with a coil to create heat for evaporation of water from the drip pan. Some time a rodent can drown in this location.

I have a Whirlpool refrigerator 21TFA that may have a drain problem or a clog. It drains in the evening, but this morning when I woke up, it smelled bad from the bottom of the refrigerator. Any advice?

Hi and Welcome to FixYa I am Kelly,
A bad smell from under the refrigerator is a result of either a dead rodent or.. dirt and lint accumulation in the plastic drip pan / catch basin and then the defrost cycle water wets it 2 to 3 times a day intensifying the smell.

Unplug the unit
Remove the rear fiberboard cover that covers the compressor area
Use a shop vac and rags to clean out the drip pan / catch basin. (These can be VERY foul if they have never been cleaned!) Make sure to clean the condenser coils and condenser fan area also. Inspect for varmits / rodents (deceased) with a flashlight. You can wash the drip pan using a rag with vinegar and water then soap and water.
Lastly... make sure the END of the drain tube that terminates in the drip pan is clean. If there was lint build up that caused a muck pool in your drip pan the muck often clogs the end of the drain line.
You never know what your going to find under a refrigerator! I could expound but it is not pleasant and only you will be able to discover the secrets of your refrigerators' "underside life." All I will say is.. it is always a... revealing experience.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Funky smell coming from bottom of frig when running

Is it a musty smell or that of something / (rodent) decomposing? If you only smell it when it is running then look for BLACK gunk that will probably appear almost like a paste. Even things like cat or dog hair will collect in damp areas. There should be a white plastic drip pan under your unit. Look for the freezer white plastic drain hose on the rear bottom of your unit on the freezer side and follow that hose to the drip pan. It catches water every time the unit defrosts which is 3 - 4 times a day depending on which defrost timer your unit has.

Usually there is a build up in the drip pan that gets mucky and then stinks like mold. It will of course need cleaned.

Also look at the fan area for the coils. Sometimes there are unwanterd home critters that attempt to get through the running fan blades and end dead up inside the cooling coil metal radiator area.

STANDING WATER ON TOP SHELF

If the freezer is on top then empty out the freezer and remove the bottom and back liner of the freezer compartment usually phillips screws. In the back you will see the freezer coils along with a defrost element. Below these two items u will see a drip tray that collects water from the coils on defrost cycle, in the center of the pan will be a drain hole that connects to a hose that leads to a pan under the refrigerator.Normally the water is collected there and evaporated. The hole in the tray in the freezer is clogged. Thaw it and clean it until you can pour water in it and it goes to the pan down below. please rate me
