This is second fridge/freezer, kept in garage. Opened freezer to remove something only to find everything was defrosted. Fridge area also warm, but seemed like it was cooler than freezer side. Is this a compressor problem? If so, would it be better to replace with a small freezer or repair the side by side? Cost of either might be a problem that will take a while to resolve.

You dont say how old the unit is or the make,if i assume its an old one i would buy new cos its cheaper to run, make sure its able to run in you garage temperature as most new units will only operate at +10C to +35C and you will need to be able to have one that runs at cooler temp during winter.(depending where you live).i bought mine from a garage sale after checking the rating plate,.paid a quarter of shop price for one that was only 9months old.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the feedback. Trying to come up with least expensive solution due to limited funds. Hadn't considered garage sale possibilities."

Amana fridge freezer AS2628HEKB fridge warm & freezer frosty inside

The board should be replaced before the unit will operate properly. Be sure to check out all circuits to make sure there is not some kind of short. If there is, it may burn out the new board also.

Had similar problem, freezer was working fine, but fridge was warm, (68 degrees) It wasnt my damper, the mother board was fried, and so was the inverter board that told the compressor what to do, after having the inverter and two mother boards replaced.......I threw it out, biggest piece of ****, only three years old, and Sears would not stand behind it, even though I used their repairmen. I will never buy another GE product, or enter a Sears store again

Fridge freezer kept in cold garage. Freezer works from time to time but fridge stopped work. Could it be a thermostat problem or due to temperature of garage?

The problem is with the garage temperature. The temperature sensor for the refrigerator is in the fridge compartment, but the evap coils are in the freezer. Refrigerators were designed to work in an air conditioned space. When they are put into unheated spaces, it does not work well. The fridge thermostat typically is set to 40 deg F. If the outside temperature is close to that, then it does not turn on the compressor as much so the freezer will have a hard time staying below freezing.

There are garage refrigerator kits for people who put fridges in un heated garages in the winter. They just simple electric heaters that warm the fridge's thermostat to cause the compressor to run more often. This helps the fridge to maintain temperatures better in the freezer compartment. The same thing can be accomplished by putting a small wattage bulb in the refrigerator compartment. Just remember to remove it during the warm weather otherwise you will pay a large electricity bill in the summer months.

Fridge stopped working/ freezer still works great?

the freezer works ok..this is where the cooling unit is..so, if the freezer works ..its not blowing or allowing air to flow into fresh food area..if its missed its defrost..it will not allow air to go into fresh food area and you need to remove panel and defrost coils ..or see if blower is working...check for bad heater or defrost thermostat or what controls defrost ie timer or board
