My xbox has been running well for the past 2 years until a few weeks ago when the red ring appeared while i was playing. I turned the console off and turned it back on and the green light came back on so everything seemed fine, until a 2 days ago when the screen went blank and all i could hear was the sound of the game and i cant get it to work again.

Check out the xbox website and use the warranty verification tool to see if it is still under warranty. I believe the consoles with three red rings get an additional couple of years under warranty...
If you have the red ring of death that is because the GPU and the CPU overheat, you just need to stop the heat and you will be back and running >> Xbox 360 Repair guide
No need to replace the chip.. What you have to do is replace the hardware (x clamp) on the video chip the same way it's done when an xbox gets the RROD. reheat the chip so that it connects again by letting it run for about 5-7 minutes with the fan disconnected, turn it off again, wait about 30 seconds and then turn it back on. I fix 360's with this error code at least 3 times a week.
In some cases after doing the clamp trick you will get RROD. No worries, just follow the proccess above and everything will run smoothly.
Its the red ring of death. It happen to me about 1 year ago. You have to contact microsoft. I contacted them and they shipped out a brown box from ups. I packed the xbox 360 in it and took it to ups and everything was paid for by microsoft, they will fix it and mail it back to you in about 2 weeks. good luck
your 360 is a first run off assembly. they were junk from the start. my warranty expired also but called microsoft and they said if the ring of death is related to the first run of 360s they willextend the warranty. exactly what happened to me. 8 days later they sent me a brand new 360 cause problems with the first run 360s can't be properly fixed. contact them tell them the problem and you will get a new one. hope this helps Tadster
this sounds like your xbox is overheating. If you could try to run it in an area that has a lot of air that flows over the back. you could also plug in a usb fan on the back of the 360. note, if you continue to let the xbox overheat, this could lead to the rings of death which is three rings flashing. If that happens you have no hope. Hope this post helps.
This exact thing is happening to not only me but to also a friend of mine. You will probably notice that the fan kicks on really high and then goes to 2 flashing red lights, this is because the 360 is overheating or thinks its overheating. My friend's 360 starts up with the fan kicked on high and then only plays for a minute or 2, followed by the 2 red lights. If its under warranty send it back to Microsoft, I took mine and my friends 360 apart and replaced the thermal paste with arctic silver, but it kind of only helped a little for mine and not at all for my friends. SEND IT BACK!!!!!!
Three red lights means your 360 is dying. Hopefully it's still under warranty - and keep in mind that Microsoft extended the warranty for the 3 red light issue to 3 years, instead of just one. So if you bought it within the last 3 years, just call Xbox customer service at 1-800-4MY-XBOX. Be prepared to be on hold for a while. I believe you can also do this online. They will send you a box and packing instructions, and they even pay for the shipping. Once you send it, you should get it back in about 2 weeks (or more likely a new 360).
You can go to any Best Buy and go to Customer Service. They'll be able to look up if you purchased their PRP. If you did purchase this plan, they'll be able to exchange the unit for you on the spot.
Unfortunately, if you didn't go with the plan, you might have to contact Microsoft support and ship out the Xbox for a few weeks to get repaired.
i bought a new one today but still have the same problem
