you need installation CD, or bootable usb if your CD rom doesnt work...
Do not forget the drivers, to work your components properly,
use your driver CD's, or this tool: Driver Update

Asus does not provide W7 drivers for the X83V per se. However, Vista drivers have been known to work in W7. The WUA will let you know, just make sure you have everything that you are going to use plugged into the computer, including things like printers and stuff, before running WUA.
Based on the specs of the laptop, it should be fully capable of upgrading to windows 7. If you have windows xp, then to upgrade without loosing info, you will need to upgrade to vista first, then 7. if you have vista, then you can upgrade directly to windows 7 without any problem.
