I get what look like rust streaks on my white clothing when I wash them in my washer. The stains do not come out even with straight bleach. RIT rust stain remover will get them out, but there's not guarantee that there won't be new stains when I wash them again. What is causing this and what can I do to prevent it???

I had this same problem. It's most likely your drum seal. Look up the part on line using your model number and google how to replace it. It's normally pretty simple if you have a DIY attitude.

1. Iron or manganese in the water supply. • Avoid using chlorine bleach on rust stains. It will make them darker and more obvious. • When iron is dissolved in the water, use granular detergent plus a non-precipitating water conditioner, such as Calgon or Spring Rain*. Better results may be obtained by dissolving detergent and water conditioner in the wash before adding the clothes. Be certain that all clothes are down into the water before starting washer. • If the iron is suspended in the water (it will settle out), attach a rust filter to the faucet and inlet hoses or to the water line. • If iron or manganese stains are a recurring problem, the customer may need a special filter or chemical feeder installed in the home to remove these minerals from the water supply. To remove: Launder with RoVer* Rust Remover Part No. 057961 using the directions below: • Top loading washers: a. Fill the washer with water (no detergent), selecting a temperature suitable for the fabric (hot or warm). b. Add 1/3 cup RoVer and let it dissolve by agitation. c. Add clothes and allow washer to complete the cycle. d. Follow up with an additional wash with detergent.

Be sure to check the spin basket for rust spots also.

My LG Front Load washing machine is leaving black streaks and smudges on my clothing. These streaks and smudges are ruining my clothes!

Hi,

There can be several things that can cause this problem. The most common are:

1. Fabric softener - did you switch brands lately?

2. Chlorine bleach - if added at the wrong time

3. A mechanical problem with the washer, like a leaky transmission leaking oil.

4. Rust staining, sometimes caused by the water being used in the machine.

Here is a link to a site that discusses this issue more in depth:

Brown streaks on white cloths?

Hi Ralph,
It may be important to have an idea as to what caused the stain/discoloration. Carbona (http://www.carbona.com/home.php) has different products specific to the various reasons for the problem. You may be able to use bleach, depending on the fabric affected. Some white material turn yellow with bleach
Hope this helps ~ Good luck!

Have had numerous items ruined due to brown stain

My Maytag Front Loader also has periodically caused rust stains on clothes. After investigating it I determined the cause.

The top of the machine is rusting around the opening under the lid where you add the detergent, fabric softener, and bleach. Water apparently splashes up on the bottom of the lid and it rusts. The flakes of rust then flake off and fall into the plastic reservoir and are washed into the machine. The only fix is to replace the top of the machine, or take it off, physically clean off the rust and apply a coating of rust resistant paint to the inside. A quick fix is to remove the plastic cover (4 phillips screws) and clean as much rust off around the edges as you can. Be sure and keep the rust from falling down the hole where the water flows into the machine.

My Washing Machine lid is stained from dye from a wet black pillow that was placed on it. How do I remove the stain?

I suggest pouring a whole bottle of hydrogen peroxide on it and let it sit overnight. You can try the same thing with straight bleach. I have even mixed to the two together and found that it works but DO NOT suggest mixing the two together. There is a reaction that it caused by the two combined. Apart from that you may need to purchase the RIT color remover to see if that works.

Whirlpool duet front loader washer/dryer

It is not the dryer causing the problem. We get the brown streaks on our white clothes before putting them in the dryer. I have ruined more white clothes over the past six months with this Duet washing machine!!! We also don't use bleach so I don't think it is the HE/Clorox combo that somebody mentioned earlier. Anybody know what exactly is causing this yet... before I throught the moldy stain causing Whirlpool duet out?

Rust stains and bleach spots.

I'm sorry but the white spots will be due to bleach. It may be that there was undissolved bleach in the washer after the first load. Maybe some of it came out with the whites and lay in wait in the basket.

I doubt the makers would guarantee anything for 7 years, so no free basket or installation is likely. Seems there is a chip in the enamel and dampness / water from the previous wash days before sits there collecting iron as rust particles.

For the time being you could try rinsing the machine out before the first load. That might prevent the rust marks or reduce them.

Liquid Bleach dispenser doesn't work correctly

This may not be relevant, but by design, bleach does NOT dispense in the Buly/Bedding, Kids Wear, and Silk/Ultra Delicate cycles. If you try to use it, it remains in the dispenser.

As for the yucky smell, leave the door open when not in use.
