I own a Rowenta Model DZ 9080 steam iron and when it is filled with water and standing in an up-right position, water drips from the heel plate area. The iron is out of warranty, but is relatively unused.

I have purchased two Rowenta irons. Both have the problem with water leakage. The entire iron looses all of it's water....both in the stand up position and the sitting down position. This happened after a couple of months for both items. I contacted Rowenta and they never responded. I will never purchase another item from them. Obviously, the irons must be defective. I'm going to contact consumer affairs.

Jenny, I have the same problem in the exact same area! Mine is much more than a "leak", the water just POURS out! I paid over $100 for it and I think that at this point, I'd be better off buying a cheaper iron and plan on replacing it after six months! My Rowenta started doing this two DAYS after the warranty ran out! Soooo maddening!

The best advise I can offer is to take your Rowenta to the garage, put on safety glasses, grab a #10 sledge-hammer and pound the **** out of it. This will fix the water leakage problem as you won't be able to put water in it ;-) And so much more satisfying then talking to Customer Service.
Mine had the same trouble, and I think it was caused by overfilling it. I drained all the water, then refilled it half full and used it and let it sit, both turned on and off. It leaked a very small amount at first, then was done. I think the small amount that came out was water that was left over somewhere inside from the first overfill. I then overfilled it again, and it immediately leaked from the bottom (heel plate area). Good luck!
There are 2 problems here. 1). Rowenta irons have a weird tank and you cannot use distilled water in them if you do they will aventually leak. They say to use nomal tap water and if your water is over 12 grains of hardness then use bottled spring water or a combination of spring and tap water. This should fix most of Rowenta leaks.
2). I've got the same problem with a DZ 9080 where when filled full and left standing up the iron will be sitting in a puddle of water around the heal. Mine started happening after I took it in for waranty work, it stopped heating and they had to replace the sole plate. I took it back twice and they just lied to me and kept saying they replaced the tank and fixed it but they never did.
The problem is the top plate on the handle where the steam and sprayer buttons are. That plate or it's seals/catches are damaged and when full it leaks from the button area under the handle. I've ordered a new plate. I'll let you know if this works.
I'm really trying to find a parts break-down for this unit, DZ 9080. When inspecting my handle plate there are 6 plastic clips that should hold this part in place (and seal it against leaks). They all appear to be in good shape, so I'm worried that the idiots that replace my sole plate left out a washer or a spacer so the handle is bent slightly and the clips won't stay latched. I can get this to stay put for a short period and all is well but then it starts slipping out of place and your hand gets wet.
Rowenta sucks, but this is the best iron I have ever used, I really want to fix it.
Yes, my rowenta model DX6700 is also leaking from the heal. I bought this iron after having a GE for ten years because I thought it would iron my clothes better. I've had it less than two years. How frustrating!!!!!!
My wife uses DX 8800 and ricently start complaining about water leaking. I took it apart and find out that small rubber pieces from hatch gasket not allowing valves to close completely when needed.
These irons are designed for a person who irons frequently, not a casual user. The user manual should be read carefully and followed or you will have trouble and become frustrated. I purchased my iron from Goodwill store and it leaked. So I downloaded the user manual from their website, read it, and it worked perfectly! Here are some of the instructions from the manual:
After use, unplug the iron, pour away remaining water and set steam control to off.
Open and close the steam control several times to prevent the valve hole in the steam chamber from scaling or blocking up.
Water will leak from a cool or cold iron.Always use untreated tap water, unless your water is very hard. Then mix half and half with bottled spring water.
Do not use boiled, filtered, or bottled water.
Before filling the water tank, unplug the iron and set the steam control to DRY position.
Use the self cleaning function every 2 weeks.
Do NOT use descaling agents, they will permanently damage your iron. If your water is very hard, clean every week.
Do not overuse shot of stem button. Wait between shots.
If it's that complicated to use rowenta irons, I'm getting a different kind!
I agree I love this iron, but it should not be so complicated to control the leaking.
All of this info is in the pamphlet that comes with the iron. Following all directions does not stop leakage. I have an old Rowenta that still works. I also own a DW-5090 and a DW-9280. Both of the latter are pieces of junk. Leakage from bottom and back is constant. The 5090 leak
Ed around the area where the cord comes out. I am a sewist and a quilter. I iron a lot and I will not buy another Rowenta. The product has gone to the bottom of the heap.
This is my 3rd Rowenta and I have luved every model but this one started leaking after about 4 times of using. It was a gift from someone so I have no recourse. I spray most of my clothes with a water bottle anyway so I guess this one may work.

Mine leaks as well! really annoyed but i have to say mine didn't start leaking until last year and i've had it since 2006 so i guess it lasted longer than most.

I have the same problem. Sometimes when I go to iron, I find my Rowenta sitting in a puddle. I also find my hand wet after using the iron. Not sure exactly where the water is coming from, but it often ends up on my clothes!
I bought a DZ9080 and had to take it back to the store the next day as it would NOT stay on even with the normal 'shaking'. I got the same exact style of iron. Unfortunately, the replacement leaked so much, it finally shorted out the iron after only 4 months of use. The repair facility authorized by Rowenta USA is in NY so I had to ship my iron from SC to NY at my own expense. It was delivered in NY on Aug 5th and as of Sept 2nd, parts are still not available.
I don't really want a 'solution' as I know what I need to do.....go out and buy anything other than a Rowenta. Products must have more than a 'name' to be good.
i have same problem . Ive had three rowentas The last two has been awful about leaking. Guess I've finally learned my lesson. won't buy another Rowenta 1

Rowenta Model DW2000. Why does it continually leak water out of sole plate when sitting its heel while ironing?
I have had at least 5 Rowenta irons. Why does this expensive one Model 1800W Steamium leak when not being used? It is sitting up and does have water in the well. It says Anti Calc on the box also.
I bought Rowenta partly because it was made in Germany. It leaks profusely. So much for the value of German design and manufacture.
