Try to reinstall the video driver from Safe mode.
It appears your hard disk is OK but the operating system and or registry is corrupted.
1. Try installing the video driver first.
2. If it still does not work, back up your data files in Safe Mode then re-install XP again, make sure you delete the partition and create a new partition and do a full NTFS format, not a quick format.

SOURCE: Increase RAM memory to maximum possible in a
This is one of the easiest upgrades you can perform. There is an access panel on the underside of the laptop that usually holds the ram chips as well as the network card but not always. The access door is usally indicated by a single or two small rectangular icons. Remove the screws, the screws sometimes have a washer that allows them to stay with the cover. The covers also have small plastic tabs that are used to hold it securely in place, pry the cover off and there should be two ram sticks sitting in their slots and held on each side by a clip that engages the side of the memory chip. Pull the clips away from the sides of the chip and the chip will spring up 45 degrees from the socket. Pull the chip away at that 45 degree angle and look at the position of the notch cut in the pin side of the chip. Get the new chip and position it the same way for installation, notch in the correct place and chip goes in at a 45 degree angle. Once the chip is seated in the slot push it down untill it click through the holding clips and the chip is installed. When you fire the laptop back up, windows will recognize the new chips if they are seated correctly and there is nothing more you have to do. If they are not seated correctly, the laptop may not even boot...you'll know either way.
