Could be a start/run capacitor that was the original cause
if there is no thermal overload protection , it could be a compressor
call a technician for a proper diagnosis because if it is a compressor you have to consider a new unit against the cost to fix as the prices will be close
Probably so. I would be looking at compressor and the relay / overload that plugs into the side of it. Hopefully you are lucky and it's just that relay / overload that's bad and not the compressor or a control Board. Be sure to unplug unit before servicing. Once you remove relay / overload from compressor, shake it vigorously. If it rattles, it's bad.

you have ice build up on the evaporator. two ways to cure. first switch off for 24 hours and leave with doors open. second switch off. remove back panel inside freezer and melt ice off with a hair dryer

for reallybsq
problem could be door seals not sealing completely and hence excessive ice formed on evaporator and excess water when it melts. however, i have found this problem many times with large larder fridges and really found no cure.
for guest.
towards the bottom of the back wall, there is a gulley with a drain hole in the middle. this drain is blocked. clear it with something flexible and make sure water flows away freely
SOURCE: amana side-by-side fridge freezer only cold at the bottom
yes the evap fan in the frezer should be running when the compressor is running[it may not for a minute or so as it starts up.Amana's are good for the connectors at the evap fan motor comming apart.the connectors are white and will look like its together but when you pull it will come apart.i would always cut the connector out and use a wire nut so wont happen again.if any other questions please email thru FixYa and i will be glad to help. God bless ,tom

automatic defrost its not coming on check the heather or hi limit
SOURCE: Our freezer is not cold, food is defrosting, ice
Look at the back of the freezer wall from inside the freezer. Is there frost on it? If there is, you need to replace one of the components of the defrost system. If there is no frost then you need to have a repair made to the sealed system, it is either out of gas or the compressor is running inefficiently
